The boring answer, "it depends". Sometimes there is a lot of unwanted and un-needed frequencies that, when added multiple times, will mask other sounds. Like trying to listen to grandma when all families are gathered and talking around the crowded christmas table (2019 style). We percieve (Sides) width, directional sounds, "ginger bread cookies", etc in the upper ranges. Sometimes one can up the clarity in the sides to make the overal width a bit more clear and impactful. Likewise you can get more focus and "christmas turkey" on the low-end in the Mid channel.
That is just one way to go. You can get into surgical problems in either Mid and Sides, so that the sum is more coherent and good sounding.

Sometimes I use MId-Side EQ to reduce stereo effect. Just a little bit.

In modern productions, it is generally preferred to have the low end as centred as possible. So for that, you can use a mid/side EQ to reduce the low end in the side channel. Also, a slight boost in the upper frequencies in the side channel will give the ears a perception of increased width.
The post above by @Baxter explains it really well.

Be aware that m/s equing changes the pan of the affected frequencies. As most things in life, this has pros and cons.
