Sure, I broke the the bank buying courses online (armin va buuren's, Deadmau5's...) yet I don't think my mixing skills are good enough. I've been trying to stay positive and motivated for the past 6 months but I'm about to lose it.

Those courses are more production, now you have to focus on mixing courses. I'd say apart from the ringing out piano you are pretty much there song, arrangement wise. Mix sounds good for a rough mix, you just need that extra last bit.
Mymixlab Luca Pretolesi courses would prob be the best thing to help you at this stage. Pretty cheap monthly, you could even consume it all in a month and unsubscribe.

@Catalyst Last saw Ned in May. Andrew is still around, but Oly says it's just himself modding. Same on AZ.
So we get loads of trouble from spammers and trolls when they know he's sleeping.
One serial spammer created one account after another, just to demand Roland warez or something, and plug a Malaysian sit-com!
Others post links to warez during Olys sleep time.
And the other day we had a guy advertising links to his 3 warez sites!
And I always witness it because I like to be on at those times, but there's nothing I can do.

I lurked for years, and I know a lot of the history.
Btw, your comment in another thread that a certain person considered you illiterate in was the most succinct comment I've read here in a while! So well written that I guess it hit a nerve with that person! Well done.

 

Wow, that really sucks. This job is too overwhelming for one person, I can personally attest to that from back when I was moderating both forums. If you have anything personal going on at the same time, it can really fuck with your mental state. That's why there needs to be a team in place, particularly composed of people from different time zones so they complement each other. There's so much to do, especially if you choose to not only moderate but add something of value to the forums. Poor Olymoon.

Your low end is the biggest problem. The mix is also not "glued" enough.

How do you suggest fixing the low end problem?

 

Kick is boomy, also has too much low mid info, HP filtering is not right etc. Check your mix on better monitors, or take it to a friend that has better monitoring conditions or give your stems to a mastering engineer, fiverr has some good mastering experts that do not charge a lot.
Mix sounds good and clean tho, nothing you cant fix fast.

 

Kick and bass to sit well together is hardest to get. The easiest way is to sacrifice some lower frequencies in one of them, as well as low mid [200-300Hz] ones. One of the ways is to put a HPF on a kick at about 50-70Hz, then lower the 200-300hz on the bass so that you can still hear the kick well, but the bass will be more dominant. I hear this most often in trap and DnB music, where bass is more important than the kick.

In techno, on the other hand, kick is more important, so you get the kick sound powerful and put HPF on the bass, lower low mid frequencies on the kick a few dBs just so they complement each other and sit right in the mix. After doing that, I would also put them through a bus channel and use light bus compression on them like 1:2, threshold set to give you about -3dB, but just use your ears to adjust the sound to what fits the mix best.

These are just some basics... mixing is kinda like chess, a lot of strategy and sacrifice, or like painting - giving some details more space whilst putting less important details in the background by using duller colours... It's also like painting a bus with a toothbrush according to Quincy Jones.
