overall i would just add.

less theory, more hands-on experience mixing.

train your ears.

also,
pick ONE eq and pick ONE compressor, and stick to using those 2, for atleast 6months. -
using just one might seem "borring" or "unsexy" at first, but you want to train your ears while using "the tools", no need to go overboard and make it harder on yourself by using 10000 different tools.

i presume you are not mixing at all, and are just making "beats" and want them to sound "good enough" .

every tracks different my man but i do have a few go to plugins i use stock fl eq para eq 2 ott (yes i kinow but its still great for bass)
cytomic the glue for busses and also its nice on leads and i havent made a single track where i havent used psp stuff or the joey sturgis plugins (awsome plugins for 30 quid) or the kilo heartz pack.

My mixing chain is pure sound design...

Kick: Preamp, EQ, Transient designer, Saturation, EQ, Compression, Limiter.
Hihat: Distortion, EQ, Bitcrusher, Compression, Tape, EQ, Reverb, Volume automation.
Bass: Preamp, Freq.shifter, Pingpong delay, EQ, Phaser, Flanger, Reverb, Sidechain, 2xLFO magic.
Pad: Freq.shifter, Ping pong delay, Phaser, Flanger, Erosion, Wet reverb, Sidechain, Less stereo, Limiter, 2xLFO magic.

No sends, no drumbus, no 2bus fx.

People also use it when referring to creating the overall vibe of audio for a film, or just for when they create a synth patch! haha.
So now when people say "I'm into sound design", I just nod!
