Yeah i said the same thing in the late 70's and in the 80's and early to mid 90's about guitar tube amps
Then came the Pod 1998 and it was close but lack the sound of a convincing Cab which b.t.w noone has yet master to reproduce correctly to this day
(I's the amp in the room sound i mean the miced up sound we hear on recorded tones is pretty accurate)

Later on in mid 2000 Fractal came with Axe FX and up the game a few years later Kemper arrived and now we had budget gear like Mooer and ampsims that sounds very very close

BUT they haven't nailed it yet i can still hear the difference if i hear them head to head the tube amps got something i cant really describe but it sorts of "is alive" compare to a digital ampsim that sounds more "dead" if you know what i mean?

There is some other thing software really cant reproduce and that is a Leslie cabinet if you ever stood beside one of those monsters you know what i mean i havent heard a convincing Leslie simulator yet.

I sincerely hope they managed to crack those codes in my lifetime but i doubt it.

And alot of "experts" on other instruments say the same about violins, cello, and string instruments and horns and harmonica etc etc.
And i bet it's same life or dead example they mean as to my ear many of those sounds very authentic hmm maybe not the harmonica.

I used to make my E-H Golden Throat Talkbox sound like the rotating horn on a leslie cabinet by swinging the hose over my head like helicopter blades, if you have someone doing it for you as you play your guitar it sounded great and you could record it in true stereo with properly placed mikes. This was an advantageof having the amp and driver unit in the same box, it had plenty of power from its built in 15 watt amp and the driver was designed for 50 watts RMS. this made the unit quite hefty, E-H seemed to build their products to last in those early years using fibreglass circuit boards and American made components, unsure howthey are built now but in those days I had about 10 or 12 different E-H pedals they never failed or broke down. the ones that I still own I will part with in the new year since going almost completely digital. I havent used My E-H pedals for about 40 years and I can't keep hoarding gear that I no longer use.

I have never believed in simulating analog instruments with synthesis: emulations obtained from keyboards or computers have never been really convincing, for example when I hear a solo trumpet played with a keyboard I feel like throwing up… I think that synths have another purpose:

to create a sound that does not exist in reality
(and in this duty they are unbeatable)

By analog of course you mean acoustic instruments... and i agree most performances could be underwhelming in the past. That's why people created realistic samplers with realtime articulation triggering. Play them (or program them) right and you just might get away with it :)
