To be honest I've been pondering this question for a couple of years now...I've been signed to about 4 different (trust me not as exciting as you might think) record labels, a couple of them quite sizable ones actually specialized in electronic music. The problem is you have to understand that these "record label" are interested in only 1 thing (technically 2 things), money and fame, and if you can't make them money or spread their name then your career with them will be very short lived, if it even starts. There are TONS of independent record labels who will "release" your music and stuff like that, and of course take a cut of your profit. What alot of musicians don't know is that alot of these labels use services that you can use yourself to get your music everywhere, including beatport. It's actually really easy, pay a little of bit of money, and ure music is all over the web in a few days, that's it. The rest is all about marketing yourself and growing your fanbase. Learn to harness the power of social media and communities just like this one (Audiosex) and brand yourself, get a website up, setup your social media pages, go and listen to other music and give useful feedback, make friends online, and you're on your way and you won't even need a record label, until if by chance you're contacted by a big one with a serious paycheck worth leaving behind the life you currently have, then go for it. That's my 2 cents on the matter and from my own experience.

That's how the business goes, they hunt for potential to make more money, so established artists with fan base are the way to go, popularity opens every door, for example I have 2 DJ friends, one is great in marketing and lousy in mixing, but know how to sell himself to the crowd and club owners, other one have great skills, integrity and practice every day since I know him....first guy plays in every club that he desire because he have fan base as starting point, media coverage and appearances, collaborations and other guy have so much integrity that he is pushing his bar high every day just so he can be the best he can, he don't even have a paying DJ job, because he doesn't know how to sell himself, first guy plays whenever the crowd want's and that is radio versions of that songs, other guy tries to make the best mix there is, transitions, spot on remixes and so on.First guy is buying tracks and paying whole process, other guy is struggling with making his own tunes.

So what is a point of that story, first guy is marketing material, he can earn the money and there is potential in that, other guy is talent but he is not profitable, so if you set up a meeting for both of them for any gig first guy would get them all, plain and easy, so that's how you open that doors, people skills are important, you music is medium to attract people, people are medium to attract labels, earning potential is medium for labels.

You can always try and send demos to every label you can think of, maybe someone will see some potential in your music worth promoting and pushing further, but chances are not so high, my advice is start conquering your city,country and build solid fan base there, try collaborating with someone who can bring you more attention and if you know how to play music and you are not doing that at the moment, start going at it, that's the way to make it, everything depends on climate and place where you live, maybe there is great potential to make it there, you just need to think and push yourself, you can always make it bigger and bigger you just need a plan and start, sincerely that frist guy is one of my best friends I know him whole my life, we planned his entire thing just chatting, he was going at it full speed, everything we could think off he did and nail it, we find a holes and spots where he can go, he have great people skills and he made it really fast, it was bumpy in the begging, but it payed off fast, it was that game plan and mindset from day 1, lot off patience, so just go at it, there is always something you can do and there is always more opportunity along the way

I wouldn't say promotion > talent.
Clearly you can see songs that are horrible, but got viral. Easy example "Friday". I know it's probably the most cheesy example, but the song is horrible and the video is lame.. then again has more views than some amazing songs. You could walk up to people and ask them.. What do you think of Friday and rebbeca black

while asking them.. What do you think of XXX dubstep/techno/reggae band. They might just be Oh.. i duno i listen to xxx genre.

Overall Record labels are great to launch yourself, but with so many new ways to put yourself out there. I really don't see the need other than saying I belong to EMI/OSWLA/MAU5TRAP/ETC..

Use of twitter/facebook/itunes/beatport/youtube/nimblit/soundcloud just to mention a few.. can give you a pretty good income and a good promotion without having to depend directly from a "Record label".

At the end of the day... Do CD stores even exist nowadays *no*

P.s. I didn't mention, but record labels do give you a XXX ammount of money and financial support to record "your material" obviously with a cut for their expenses. That's a good thing and also promote your music/shows/image.

P.s.s. I'm not saying Record labels are evil, but they do make you sign a pact with the devil.
