Just tried UltraLoop again after purchasing it a few years ago. It is too random and I am unable to get anything remotely usable out of it. Anyone know of a similar app that can import and mangle 4 to 8 loops at a time?

 

Not the same, but maybe look at things like Accusonus Rhythmiq (I think!) and maybe that free Big Fish Audio thing, Momentum?
But like, not them, really!

I love Ultraloop. You should try it with the Lemur template. It's so playable with multitouch on a tablet.



If you use Ableton you can make a rack of Simplers with sliced loops, set to different keyzones and play with Push, piano roll or any sequencer really. Set your Grid to however many steps you need and automate the FX.

You can also do this with a bunch of Audio/Sampler devices with Maschine.
If you use Reaktor, search the user library for different keywords + "loop".

My guy, do you happen to have one of these simpler/sampler racks saved?!? Ultraloop is so much god damn fun.ive had some pretty beastly sessions with it and Push just doing midi learn as well as navigating wih mouse

 

I do but you'd need the samples too unless I sent the .als
The set up is pretty simple. Just set Simpler devices to Slice mode and mess with the 'Slice by' and 'Sensitivity' values and even the modes themselves.

I distributed the ranges equally so you'd get a better idea but I usually set keyzones to overlap so one key plays a slice on multiple Simplers at the same time. It can sound pretty cool. Just add FX to each chain. You can use Drum Racks instead of Simplers and you get Sends/Receives for each chain. I just like the way Simpler works with Push so I use those.
Another thing with this setup if you have a Push, you only get 3 keyboard/sequencing modes: 64 Slices, Loop Selector, 16 Velocity.
If you create an empty MIDI track and point it to this rack, you can use the Melodic Sequencer and Scale options which is closer to the Ultraloop type interface, with a running sequencer and changing the Scale options on the fly can give you interesting ideas. If you want to have complete control just set it to chromatic.

 

I just bought a Leap Motion hand tracking device. I think I’m going to try incorporating it into making happy accidents with Ultraloop!!!

 

Any tips for making Ultraloops less random?

 

Turn off all the FX and set the SEQ&FX controls to center. Keep an eye on the global length. If it's set to 32 the 16 steps you see are only half of the loop.
If you do this, it should just play the loop through and repeat exactly the same.

As for loop mangling goes, it doesn't get any better than ultraloop. the results you get when, especially using your own loops, are quite astonishing. I love the Lemur template. how do i enable that in windows?
