    Hello

what do you think about the following choice of components as PC configuration for daw (and gaming too):

    CPU: i9-10900K Intel
*(why intel? well because i'm with intel for more than 15 years...and had bad experiences with AMD, and also ive heard amd for daw/pro audio was shitty)

Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z490-E Gaming
*(why this motherboard ? because it features 4 PCIE ports that i absolutely need to host 3x PCIE UAD2 cards and one PCIE RME9632 sound card), most of other motherboards has no pcie ports at all except for graphic cards. the only closest one to this motherboard would be the Gigabyte Z490UD but its of a meh quality compared to the one from asus i have chosen.

    RAM: 128gb Vengeance LPX (4x32gb) DDR4 3600mhz

(*there is nothing wrong to have a lot of fast high quality ram)

Hard drive / storage: Samsung SSD M.2 EVO 970 line + other samsung evo ssd's
    (*nothing to comment)

Graphic card: that last gen "big one" from Nvidia.

    **************************

I presume, if everything is well installed, optimized and configured there is nothing that could go wrong to use it for Studio One 5 with vst/vsti on win10 etc .

I need that power because i also do flight sims in VR and also i need a solid and beefy pc config like that to run for at least next 3-4 years without worrying much of upgrading anything.

is there anything suspicious or other recommendations ?

    TIA

I just spec'd one out for someone last night. Same CPU except I went for Gigabyte Z490 Vision D board since it had 2 thunderbolts the client needed for his sound card. It has 4 PCIE too but you could in theory use one of the thunderbolts for an outboard case to hookup more PCIE cards if need be. I picked G.SKILL NEO CL16 16.16.16.36 memory since low latency is a must. Same m.2's and AMD card instead of Nvidia since AMD's drivers run better in the background.

I'm running the same CPU and motherboard you have listed with 64GB of 3600mhz RAM. For cooling, I went with the Noctua NH-D15S and added an extra fan but you are going to need a larger case to fit it. I went with the Thermaltake Core P8 big boy. Haven't had any issues with running out of memory so I invested more money in getting 2 x 2TB M2 Sabrent SSD's and haven't looked back. If you are using this unit for music production, you also don't need to waste money on a high end GPU card. I am using an ASUS ROG Nvidia 2060 and the GPU fans never run because it is using minimal resources. Rather spend money on more SSD's for music libraries.

I am by no means a fanboy, even though I have a Ryzen 1700X and I am greatly satsfied by it and would not swap it with my previous Intel CPUs, but what makes you think AMD CPUs perform worse than Intel ones? 100% honest question, non-ironically asked!

well, it is mainly because what i read as user feedback throughout various forums online about problems reported running pro audio / daw on amd, but i can tell that dates a bit

what type of audio software and plugins you use ? do you experience cpu spikes and other annoyances or problems?

Can confirm Gigabyte Z490 Vision D is a pretty nice allrounder. By the way 128GB of memory is overkill for most people. Try first with 64GB if that is not enough add 64GB more

i have just checked how that Gigabyte Z490 Vision D does look like, its a nice motherboard but unfortunately not the one for me, as it features only 3 pcie ports.

You might wanna hold your horses and check the AMD 5000 series: incredible performance, especially with gaming. Even the 5600X, the cheapest ($299) outperformes the i9 (linus). I heard the newest Zen had a major improvement for DAW stuff. Curious how Zen3 will do.

Wow...it appears that there are no AMD 5000 processors in stock anywhere. Has this series been released or are they sold out?

Probably sold out atm. I can see listings here in Greece but the prices are shifted upwards. 5800X @ 550 euros and 5950X @ 940euros lol. Just wait a month or so and prices will be normalized. AMD has promised wide availability during December...
    Cheers :)
