Stumbled on to this benchmark and boy, I was excited. Every laptop CPU that I've ever heard of in the past, never reached 8 cores 3.2Ghz or 1600+ in Geekbench. But today, we have a winner (seems like). The single core and the multi core outperforms the Macbook pro 16 inch from 2019 with Intel i9. It also outperforms the desktop class i9 chip in an iMac with 10 cores and 3.6Ghz in single core score.

What's even better is the macbook air is fanless. It's only passively cooled with a heatsink.

I know that this doesn't mean real life performance gains, but I have never seen a leap in CPU benchmark performance like this for years. And it's very promising that, studio computers can now be laptops, and desktops can be even much more powerful in our studio. Finally Skrillex can release his second album lol.
This also means the barrier to entry will pretty much be gone. Everyone who have a baseline laptop can now make music like the pros. Video editing, designs, etc. If this is real, we're now going through historic shift. Fingers crossed.

Who would say an M1 chip would be so powerful. Paint me impressed.



I am joking, of course, but since I have seen the benchmarks and power consumption figures of their M1 silicon already, it got me thinking how nice it would be to have a desktop based on a this powerful ARM CPU. Linux works fine with anything you throw at it, and there are loads of great plugins for Linux already, so when the time comes, maybe it could become a great and powerful option for a desktop rig. Still no ARM motherboard within sight, and you can't buy Apple's M1 version of the CPU, of course, but I expect the third player on the market in the next couple of years, as powerful as M1 and a proper motherboard from Asus, Gigabyte etc.

p.s. still, don't forget what I said about the very powerful graphene nanotubes CPUs coming. however, they are not really around the corner, even if IBM made a graphene chip in 2011 and the transition process is not that costly. I think that's the next CPU tech, should give us about 10x or more powerful CPUs, and cooler, than the silicon ones.

yeah to be honest, this is what i'm more excited for. Even though Apple is leaping the CPU game, they're not necessarily the ideal company you would want for real growth and accessibility to happen for majority of the world. But, once Apple proved that the business model works, the chip makes sense, other players will copy them, and voila! customers will be having much powerful computers with much energy efficient chips. That's a win.
