It took you 10 years to make it run? Typical Microsoft.

VST folder is best made somewhere out of the OS folders. Like C:\VSTPlugins so you avoid any problems with permissions on files. Portable Reaper is great since it keeps all its files in one folder, otherwise you will find its other files in users/*user name*/AppData/Roaming folder and you have to make the system files visible to be able to see it. It's easy, you can do it from Windows Finder [Explorer:)].

Firewall... you can use Windows Firewall and make it block software, or Zone Alarm which is much easier to use. There are helpful tools for editing Windows Firewall rules, but I can't remember what it's called right now. Others will know, I'm sure. I found it. It's Windows Firewall Control and the latest is v6.4.

Hosts file is in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder. You can use Notepad that you have to run as administrator [right-click in the start menu - "run as administrator"] to edit it. Just put 127.0.0.1 in front of any host name you don't want Windows to be able to reach through the network.

    Cheers!

Maintaining a Hackintosh is actually easier and more comfortable than using Windows in my experience.

/facepalm Are Macs are better than PC's or Hackintosh? Who cares!!! Ultimately it's about what you create, not how.

If you need a special custom Windows 10 installation image, just write me a pm.

It's possible to remove unneccessary apps, advertising stuff, stupid OneDrive, Edge,
Defender, telemetry, biometry & monitoring services, etc. to save a few Gigabytes
of disk space. The final installation only takes 9-10GB (instead of 15-17GB) and it
    runs pretty fast in comparison.

In my own personalized image I also added some settings I usually always do after installation,
some useful scripts to get a better workflow, custom wallpapers and I predefined my VST paths.

Could do something similar for you.

From all my friends in real life only 2 are using MacOS and those 2 are not very happy with it.
If you ask me, since a couple of years more and more users are switching to windows or linux
because they're tired of apples decisions and especially their pricing models and the big changes
    with every update.
On Windows there were some stupid decisions in the past but there was never an update that
urged all the developers to rewrite their products completely and for everything else,
    there are workarounds available.

And here another reason to switch to windows or linux:
    https://www.heise.de/news/macOS-11-...-Dienste-vor-Mac-Netzwerkfiltern-4937971.html

It's in German so you may use a translator.
That article says, with Mac OS Big sur, users aren't able to block any data traffic to apple anymore.
Firewall tools like Little Snitch aren't allowed to work in the Kernelspace (only in the userspace)
so it's not possible to block specific connections system wide in Big Sur.

That also could mean that Apple will always see when you use cracked software if that software
uses MacOS features to call home. But when Apple goes full ARM, that will become obsolete as you're
only able to run signed software.

Only solution would be to use custom firewall in your network between the router and your devices
(like Pi-hole, a custom Raspi DNS-Server that allows you to tunnel all of your connections for blocking ads and other stuff).

So your suggestion is to switch to windows 10, an OS, which collects so much data from so many different services and apps and telemetry data that it takes like an hour of extra work with specialized console-based tools which may break some windows features just to get rid of it all??? Great idea! :D

Windows or Linux as I said. I'm using both in a dual boot system.
Windows for Music production + games, Linux for everything else.

MacOS btw. collects data as well, it's just not known in public that much
and from Big Sur on you won't even be able to see it as it prevents you from monitoring any traffic or connection
that comes from MacOS and Apple's apps and softwares. In my opinion thats way more worse than beeing
able to turn off processes using command line tools.

But I don't need all of these tools because I cleaned my system before I installed it.
Fot that I'm using NTLite (you have to buy a license for it because any cracked version wracks up
the edited system at some point, at least in my case). License costs just 40$ which is a good price if you ask me.

After editing the image using NTLite, I use MSMG Toolkit (completely free) to integrate packages like vcredist, ms DaRT
and some custom settings. To modify the image while it's mounted (for the integration of themes & wallpapers or replacing system files),
I use NSudo to run XYplorer or any other file explorer tool with Trusted Installer privileges.

    Short:
NTLite - to remove apps, packages, services and add custom settings
MSMG Toolkit - to integrate redist packages and other features easily
NSudo + XYplorer - to add customized system files

At the end I use NTLite again to recompress the wim image to make it as small as possible.

Ps. I do all of this in a virtual machine with a freshly installed OS.
It's always better to do such things on a clean OS without any process that interferes
while editing an image. It also makes sure that there's no malicious software or virus in the background,
that could fuck up your customized OS or Antivirus that slows down the whole process.

You mean nLite - that was 2001. NTLite gets updated on every new release/upgrade/update of Windows.

Another great Feature of Windows 10: it just deletes Apps it doesn't like. DriverBooster come to mind and just 2 minutes ago, it deleted Patch my PC which is a legitimate software to update installed apps and install new ones! Great Job, Microsoft, great Job!

Hm, using Patch My PC as well but something like that never happened to me.
I bet Defender did that, maybe it read malicious structures in it (like defender always does on several small tools for no reason). Thats why I removed Defender from my image completely and installed a different solution later.

I didn't know nsudo. Seems nice, I'll check it out.

BTW guys, I never get tired of recommending Sordum tools. Little, easy, portable, use and forget tools.
For instance, easy Windows Firewall and hosts file editing like some user was advised to:
    https://www.sordum.org/8125/firewall-app-blocker-fab-v1-7/
    https://www.sordum.org/8266/bluelifehosts-editor-v1-3/

Being an old fuck very experienced with Windows, first time I looked was like "well, I already know how to do that by other means". Now I use several of them and are one of the first things I copy to my Windows partitions.

Download winaero from https://winaero.com/ type into its search bad UAC, disable, type windows defender, disable, forget about anti-virus they all slow the PC down and if a 15 year old can hack the FBI's servers what chance have you got with a free anti-virus? If you plan to optimise windows for audio there's good info here: https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/pc-optimization-guide-for-windows-10/

If you really want to run a fast streamline windows 10 without all the system hogging crappola I recommend you search for windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb iso. There are newer versions but the home networking has been removed by microsoft so if that's important to you for streaming things easily and getting them set up easily for home networking this is the version to go with.

    Good luck.

    Wrong.
I'm using Windows for Pro Audio since 1989 (AdLib audio card ;-)
    Never got any problems.

If you deal all incoming data with care (internet, e-mails, websites ....) you wont be at risk.

The best way is to have an Audio-dedicaced computer and never go online with it (PC or Mac, same advice).
