I bought a used UAD Solo card once.

I installed it, downloaded the UAD Plugins, installed those and then I could use all the plugins that were registered to that hardware by the previous owner. At that stage the ownership of the card was not yet transfered from the previous owner to my user account. Once it was, I only had the legacy licences that come with every card. Demo Licences were reset as well. So what @yabiss said is actually only half the truth.

That's why you sometimes see users selling you a card but without transfering the ownership for the card. Because you can not chose which plugins you want to transfer. It's either none or all:

"Important:

The current owner will be asked to choose if they want to transfer the plugins registered to the System that they are transferring the UAD-2/Apollo device from. Users cannot select individual plugins to transfer. If the current owner selects Transfer Plug-ins: YES then ALL of the registered plugins in that System will be transferred to the new owner's UA account along with the UAD-2/Apollo device."

So you can either transfer none or all the licenses over

And that's why I won't buy any more UAD plugins. BTW, these effin' UAD PCI cards get very hot even if they don't do anything."

Why all the hassle? Far better plugins from other manufacturers, less pricey and even more effective. These over priced plugins form UAD, the native ones are exactly the same, Plugin Alliance, for instance and require NO submitting to a ridiculous hardware based system on seriously old technology and charged and arm and leg for it. UAD the biggest swindlers in the business endorsed by the "Pro" mixer "celebs" to make it look legit.
Still to everyone their poison but with such low revenue these days from music I'd rather spend my hard earned cash on more realistic investments that will generate a better return. Better instrumentation, better mics etc.

 

Bit of a pointless post, really. Of course there are other plugins available - and UAD owners can of course access and use all those too. And there are UAD plugins that are very good, many that these days have decent native alternatives and some that don't really have any exact equals elsewhere (I'm not going to bother listing them.)

And yes, there are plenty of us who have already invested in UAD, really like many of their products, and would be happy to have even more plugins available should there be a proper solution (which there isn't.)

You can run several cards with the same plugins, on different computers, with the same license. Just install the UAD-cards once in the same computer and add the license.

I sold my licenses since UAD really ain't worth HUGE prices compared to native plugins (there are a few gems though).
I still have some UAD cards to be able to open old project and licenses still work but I can only run the old software..

 

From memory, and plugin licence you have can be used on all UAD hardware devices in the same group - it used to be a max four UAD devices per group, but I don't know offhand if that is still the case.

You can create as many groups as you want though, but a plugin licence will only work on one group iirc.

 

Just a heads up not sure if it was mentioned. If you use LUNA or any LUNA extensions they run off ilok.

Also every time you buy a new plugin the used Demo time resets. Also never buy two plugins at once. They always give you a $25 coupon so buy one at a time. After that transaction, there will be a new coupon on your account within seconds.

Never pay full price unless you need the plugin and your 14 day demo ran out. They do 40% and 50% off a few times a year. Not as much as the other plugin companies but it's much less painful paying $150 than $300+ per plugin.

 

This comes off as so salty and just ignorant. Yes, I 100% agree about their business practices- but to say that their plugins are "exactly the same" is just simply wrong. The UA plugins are consistently at the top for a reason. They're incredible.

 

Do you notice now, that UAD plugins are updated too (don't know if it was the case before quite a long time) but if you update with the latest driver install from the site when you are logged, UAD card unplugged, reboot, plugged it, some plugins won't work anymore... ?
Like Oxford's for example.

 

Yes, it's a bug on UAD's Oxford plugin, as well as some from Precision series and few others. It's a known bug going on for some time, but UA never fixed it

 

Spend less time worrying about software, and more time working on skills.

I have a UAD but it's not the magic ingredient and the last plugin I bought was years ago (the Culture Vulture).

 

Years ago, if you bought one of the initial UAD1 pci cards from Mackie or through UAD themselves, there was a small exploit where you could initialize the 14 day trial for all the plugins you didnt own and then adjust the time on your pc to extend the trial period. UAD caught on to that pretty quick and patched it. As far as I know thats the only "hack" that's ever worked for UAD, and that was way back in the mid 2ks.

 

Nope. There was another. (But also a long time ago.)

 

So if I understand its fixed now in the latest UAD drivers that are out, and to continue to do the trick with keeping all plugins on my Apollo, Im stuck to the v9122.... Have to stay on Catalina then.

Anyone else do this trick here, keep plugins in the Apollo and don't update?

And, heard of guys that offers all plugins for free when you give them your system profile text file? What's the danger of that?

Other thing, @yabiss, do you manage to make all your plugins work on Luna?
