    Hi ,

Is there anyone here into Disco/Funk/Proto house from the 70s/early 80s?
Digging this era to create current music or simply collecting rare source?

Well, not clearly a plugin related post. In this case i'm digging Rare Track for the groove, Drums Sample, String break. It's more a sampling or Inspirational source related post. I'm personally digging deep in seventies/early eighties Multitrack session wich is still an amazing base of knowledge and source. Far beter than any splice or current soundpack.

so these are arranged sample-segments only or does it contain some live instruments over it?

in any case very fluid edited and arranged. thanks for sharing

i dig that sound, cant really post anything here though. i dont sample, i try to create the feel but in a more of a disco-house vibe i guess making disco inspired basslines and piano riffs. im a sucker for old school disco and rarities but tend to only like strong themes i get easily bored with to "jazzy" and loose stuff.

Disco and Funk don't, and didn't, really mix.
Disco also borrowed from some of the more regimented funk of The Soul Searchers.
    From 1974...
Disco came and went, very briefly. At the latter part of the 70s.
Funk was here since the 60s and still is. :chilling:

This track came to mind when you think about "proto house". Weather Report's "River People" from 1978. This track (written and produced by Jaco who played the drums too) and the whole album (Mr. Gone) was really shat on when it came out, they were accused of being horrible sell-outs and "going disco".

Now, I just think they were really ahead of their time with this one.

I think the music of this era, just as the music of the late 1960s to mid 1970s era, is very popular among many current bands and artists. I mean guys like Bruno Mars (not a fan) or Anderson Paak based many of their songs on the disco-funk formula. There are many more known and unknown current artists doing the same. What I like particularly about the late 1970s to 1980s synthfunk: it's not hard to recreate in the box, since it relied so heavily on synths. Try to recreate a late 1960s funk tune, that relied on real instrumentation, without any guitar, keys or bass players - it's impossible to nail down just with virtual instruments.

The thing is, it still involved real acoustic electro-acoustic instruments too!
And I can do a mock-up all in the box for my band.
Ac. drums/w electronic maybe. Or one or the other.
El Bass, maybe mixed with a Moog. Or one or the other.
    Synths!
    Chicken grease guitar!
    Et cetera, et cetera.
So I totally disagree! :) It's a piece of piss!
When you say late 70s to 80s "Synthfunk" as a genre you made up!, I imagine you are more talking of Electro, which was what drum machine based Hip Hop was called for a while.
Always a DMX or Linn, and synths.
    Synths tracked live to tape.
    That's very easily do-able ITB!
Otherwise, you just talk of the general pop music of the time.
I know The Funk. It is within me.
People say I Am The Funk.

    Calm down mate,
constant trolling is not required. Of course you can do a mock up of a piece of music involving acoustic or electro-acoustic / electro-mechanical instruments in the box, that's not a question here. The issue here is: how authentic will it sound?

Synth Funk is not a "genre I have just made up", it's a commonly used term for 1980s funk that relied heavily or exclusively on synths for all aspects of the instrumentation, from the drums sounds, to the melodic and chord aspects to pads / string-like sounds. Not to mention that there is no government issued publication defining which are official genres and which aren't. Zapp's 1980s records are a classical example of music that can be described as Synth Funk.

Anyone googling Synth Funk can see that it's a thing but that terminology only came along after the era had passed.
At the time, bands like Cameo and Zapp would have just been labelled R&B (or the other term that is not socially acceptable these days)

    As I imply, very!
It gets me record deals and people think it's all real instruments.
It's because I know The Funk, as I said.
Commonly used in the present maybe, by people that weren't there and don't know?
    New names aren't needed.
But the real musos won't understand your new language.
    If you want. Whatever.
    But it damn fonky, right?
Was probably labelled RnB. The original RnB, not the Missy Elliot RnB!
    What? :dont:
    What? :dont:

I don't believe I have ever bought a record to sample it. I mean, they all have that possibility; but it is not why I would buy something. Whosampled is a great website.

Lots of Chicago House (and that style) producers sampled this stuff like crazy. Like, nearly entire songs. Much more obvious usage than in other genres, with no attempts to even disguise the source. (I don't mean for legal reasons). this is a good example:
