On principle a transient designer is a dynamic tool like a compressor. The parameters differ a bit and you mostly need pretty short times.
It's useful to make too soft attacks more aggressive, but you can use it the other way around too.

  6. I can see it fitting perfectly into my workflow when I was recording live bands. Drum tracks could always use a bit more snap than a compressor especially when you had up to 10 mics on the kit. But these days working ITB I might only have a kick, snare and hats. I suppose real acoustic guitar recordings can have some unhelpful transients if poorly mic'd. I myself have recorded some where the plectrum noise gave me a toneless recording of a washboard.

Does anyone have a coupon code they wouldn't mind sharing with me? Think I'm going to purchase this.

Thanks in advance if anyone has a code.

They don't have shareable coupons unfortunately but if you bought any other Studio DMI stuff you could have a combinable coupon with your personal loyalty discount. For example with my purchase they actually paid me 2.50 + intro to Slate Unlimited Monthly due to the amount of loyalty dollars I've spent.

I haven't tried it but I did a little shootout between several different transient shapers years ago and my somewhat surprised conclusion was that each one of them sounded different.
Using a dedicated transient shaper is not the only way of changing transients though. Using a compressor with increased attack time, an envelope follower plus dynamic EQ (one that can not only cut but also boost dynamically!) or just adding well-chosen samples to design attack transients is what works for me.
I feel like it's much more efficient to know a few tools well than to jump on every second new VST/AU release.

the name of the plugin is misleading. this is a compander based on the dbx 3BX, not a "true" transient shaper.
in the original unit you couldn't control the attack and release times so they added them based on other dbx models (dbx 165 - dbx 266)
what it does essentially is expanding above the threshold and compressing below the threshold, creating more dynamic range

the second plugin is a CLM dynamics expounder replica, which is a dynamic eq, but they took the low-cut filter and the low peak sections only.

hope this clarify a couple things about this plugin.
if you really want to understand how this plugin works i suggest you to read the dbx 3BX manual here : https://www.manualslib.com/manual/949254/Dbx-3bx.html#manual

    cheers

  19. As I insinuated earlier, being an old gentleman who goes back to the days of tape, dbx and multi mic'd drum kits, I always find myself wondering about the same question. Which probably should have it's own thread, but perhaps the more knowledgeable people here can tell me something. Live drumming needed a lot of work. Spill, dynamics and squeaky pedals, even drummers grunting. These days I choose a nice crisp kick. Set it to 127, choose a snare set it to 127. Then automate. There's 90% of my old job done in 2 minutes. Now if I've got a kick isolated on one channel and my snare on another...etc.. Send the whole kit to an Aux, add eq, compressor.... as far as I'm concerned it's good to go. My question is when your raw material is so clean why does it need so much treatment?

i think this plugin is designed for mastering/mixing engineers that receive super-squashed stems/mixes and they need to recover some dynamic range. the second plugin is useful to remove rumble and control low-end in a dynamic way.
also the dbx can add a lot of glue to your drum kit for example and the crossovers are spot on for loudness purpouses (low : 0hz to 150hz / mid : 150hz to 6.000hz / high : 6.000hz to 20.000hz)
