I've been looking for a way to use vst effects on Windows main audio stream. I tried VSThost, LiveProfessor, and DDMF Virtual Audio Stream but it seems that I can't get receiving audio, I tried by using virtual cables but it's not working either.

Maybe I'm missing something and somebody can help. I'm using a Focusrite 6i6 2nd gen.

    Thank you!

I wonder if you're asking this because you're annoyed by too loud effects when you're watching films and you'd like to compress the output, or some other reason? The solution may depend greatly on what you're trying to achieve. I mean, what is the purpose of putting a VST on the Windows' main output?

    No offense @shake_puig.

Hello! I finally found out the problem, I had to allow the microphone to access all apps to be able to use the Virtual Cable. Before that it would appear an error that it failed to open.

I mainly want to use it because some podcasts don't know what a compressor is.

    Nice to see the solution.
I am doing a similar thing to compress movie sounds.
Explosions etc make me turn down the volume so far I can't hear the dialog well.
A bit of limiting / compression works wonders.
I've have been using ASIO Link Pro because I have a template set for movies using Waves MV2.

Jokes aside I also want to fix this, especially at night and stuff.
Most audio cards software including mine offer Dynamic Range Compression (or whatever name they put on it) which is good but it's just an off/on switch. Too much compression in my card's case.
Also a very simple parametric EQ can help.

BTW, seems that we would need a lot of this in order to understand what the heck is going on with this "Tenet" super-flick. From what they tell me it's hard enough to understand and on top of the OST is all over the place and a second later stops and the main characters whisper something important with a such a low volume that could be masked by a fly fart.

Yeah..with a really good speaker setup, the high dynamic range may be great, but I don't have a good system.
I can remove the bass, but that doesn't really sound that good either. It is nice to keep the bass in and just compress / limit

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about Asio Link Pro, it looks really usefull. I've been messing around with it but I have a problem, Is it possible to only listen to the audio from the vst host? I get a duplicate like a parallel mix, one from windoand the other from host.

You should probably start removing the paths and watch meters / listen until you get just the source you want.
(clicking on the lines that connect inputs and outputs).
By trial and error watching meters and listening, once you figure it out, SAVE it as a preset :)
(I wish it would show where audio is present in each numbered box, before connecting the "wire" lines)

On my recent machine I got confused somehow when trying to set it up to intercept windows audio, choose that in the DAW, and then output again.
I used to use ASIO PRO a lot... I ran my DAW machine from a laptop via Teamviewer & Asio Link Pro, and was capturing 7.1 movie individual channels to capture solo sound effects, etc.
But with this machine and interface I have many more options, and i had been using this computer in "DAW mode" & NON-DAW mode (no ASIO).
But that was because i didn't want to leave my ASIO interface running all the time, because it is a PreSonus StudioLive 8 CHannel mixer.
Now i switched to always using ASIO4ALL for everything (instead selecting my motherboard audio or ASIO interface if it was on)
This way my ASIO Link Pro settings work no matter if my ASIO interface (mixer) is on or not.

I think some others may be easier to understand, but when I first was looking I saw people saying this was the best, so I never tried the others.
I really should try the others ... I have them already

I do this all the time. I have my windows audio, television and gaming console sound going to individual FL Studio mixer channels so I can process them anyway I want. I even have the FL Remote app on my phone and a custom preset set up where I can control not just volume but turn effects and full effect chains with simple buttons and sliders.

I use old E-MU cards that come with "patchmix" software that allows me to simply route windows audio and hardware inputs to whatever ASIO channel I want to. It bogles my mind most interfaces don't let you do this.

To other way around it is a little more tricky but I've had good luck with software called "vst2wdm".

Long story short: the same developer also has a software called "wdm2vst".

It's very simple to use whereas I find the banana stuff really confusing. Essentially it creates a virtual output driver for windows. You choose the virtual driver as the main output from your windows settings and then load "wdm2vst" vst effect to a mixer channel on your DAW and BOOM you have Windows audio coming through.

You should give it a try.

A little OT, if you don't mind. @No Avenger , I have just noticed your sig... it's so  Great sig for a music forum! Although one has to know a bit of German to figure it out, but a translator of some kind wouldn't spurt out a wrong word in this case, probably.

This might be overkill but I have a seperate laptop connected to a monitor that I use for watching film and this laptop is connected to an interface that outputs to my main workstation's interface and into a DAW channel so I can not only add Gain or EQ or what-have-you but I can also control with my faders on the workstation. I have the XBox and connected the same way.
All my volumes controlled by a single BCF2000.
I undertand the potential signal degradation from digital to analog to digital to analog but for streaming movie and game audio, it's negligable.
    On my speakers, anyways.

But the real funny thing is, did you listen to the German word, e.g. by clicking on the speaker icon like here https://www.dict.cc/?
