  3. The range of what? All compressors have a number of dials, knobs, switches and other things that affect the range of something.

The Gain reduction range I guess.
Fabfilter Pro-C2,PA Elysia mpressor,Flux Pure compressor come to mind at this time.

  5. My first guess would have been the threshold range. That's where a compressor really gets to work.

All 3 of the Arturia compressors (UREI 1176, Gates Sta-Level, DBX 165A emulations) have a compression range function in the advanced settings to let you limit the maximum amount of compression the compressor can do. I really, really like those comps.

  7. Do you mean ratio? Many kinds of compressors can extend the range of the amount of compression from 2:1 right through to brickwall limiting. Is that adjustable range?

Do you mean the frequency range?

not threshold not freq range...look to fabfilter comp...it has a range function
with the range function you can adjust upward or downward compression
    thx mate

Wouldn't that equal ratio then? The amount of gain reduction divided by the increase of dB above the threshold = ratio, if adjustable = range? :winker:

Aah... aren't we going from compressor to expander there?

im not sure but ,its not gain reduction range....its sort:mad: of calibration of incoming signal
    no
    --
sry im not good at this and just learning a bit and to be honest and i guess maybe i will never fully keep or even get the whole theory behind it i just want to learn to transcribe upward or downward compression and how its sounds

i hope someone chiming in soon...i guess he waits to see if someone other knows bout and what he writes ..our noa:hillbilly::mates:

i think Mpressor from Elysia can do that, i own it but nowadays i dont use it that much. I prefer Smartcomp to headstart everything basically

  16. Most home studio producers are unaware of the various types of compression and expansion modes/types. Downward compression seems to be the ‘go to’ mode for almost all mixing chores and yet there are other modes available that are even more potent than the standard downward compressors used to mix and master music.
There are times when expansion will yield far better results than compression and vice versa and the trick is knowing when to use which mode.

    Downward and Upward compression
The most important thing to remember with downward and upward compression is that BOTH types reduce the dynamic range of the audio being compressed.

A downward compressor reduces gain above the threshold.
An upward compressor raises gain below the threshold.

    Downward and Upward Expansion
There are two basic forms of Expansion in music production – Upward and Downward Expansion, and the best way to explain them is to compare them to existing processes like a gate and a compressor. Whereas compressors narrow the dynamic range of a signal expansion does the exact opposite and extends the dynamic range. A downward compressor will reduce the audio signal above the threshold whereas an upward compressor will boost the audio signal below the threshold. Both narrow the dynamic range of the audio signal.

Downward expanders reduce the level of an audio signal below the threshold, making quiet sounds quieter. This extends the dynamic range of the audio signal.

Upward expanders boost the level of an audio signal above the threshold, making loud sounds even louder. This extends the dynamic range of the audio signal.

Nope, Sta doesn't have this, but the other two do.

Not really, if you set the ratio to a certain value, this is already a given range.

I remember Waves has two upward compressors, MV2 and MaxxVolume.
TDR Nova has a built-in reduction range limit.

i was about tomentiointhe glue but ott does aswell sort of the timeknob works as a range knob dor how much upward/downward compression is needed.
