Cubase Pro can I run on a VM

    I have a server with 128 gigs of Ram and want to setup cubase as a tester in one VM and run a production one in another VM will I get the same results as just in windows and is it possible and What VM OS is the better one to use

    Every experience for identical testing results in a VM requires the same thing, which is the ability to load and install identical drivers and the identical installation routine. While some drivers have no effect on performance, some do. Some systems have effects on audio from network drivers and the extra virtual adapters may have an adverse effect and that has nothing to do with RAM, while some have none. If you are blessed then you only have one concern. You are running an operating system inside your operating system on a virtual hard drive on your physical hard drive. The performance in this environment even with the gruntiest machine and a good-sized RAM buffer and size which you have available, will still have latency and performance indicators that would not be present in a non-virtual environment. Also, this is assuming you are not using a specific non-generic audio input with drivers that the VM cannot recognise which becomes a problem if so.

    Windows has always been the better network computer of the two if that is your intent and MAC is a file server and never has been capable of being a dedicated network server. I gather you mean a file server because you made no mention of Windows Active Directory so either would work if you are doing direct to machine access, MAC or WINDOWS as long as that is the booting native environment.

    It's not something I would do with any DAW, i.e. run it in a Virtual Environment. Maybe they fixed all the prior issues with that level of intensive of hardware addressing not transferring without occasional glitches and if so, then go for it. I'd be interested to see your results.

    EDIT: If you are really dead serious about this and you are 100% sure all of your drivers will load in a virtual environment flawlessly, I'd run the booting environment on a Linux server. It has a lower tax on your system and the VM's can probably be either or both. Both MAC and Windows have an edited/customized version of UNIX anyway in their booting pre-GUI, or a hardware abstraction layer as Windows calls it. By Linux I mean Linux server not a Linux GUI so you'd need to learn-up on UNIX server command line.

    VM is not an environment for DAWs. Trust me, you don't want the headaches and frustration. To those who haven't tried it, probably sounds like an ideal situation but it isn't due to a shtload of audio latency introduced and many other shortcomings which is a waste of time to write about really. And you need to know well what hardware to select for the VMs and then set up the whole hardware/software combination correctly, which means being experienced. Which most likely you are not (no offense meant) since you came up with this question hehehe.
    Your best bet as i see it, is networking two or more comps and use something like Vienna Ensemble to make the slave machine(s) behave as a Vst/Vsti console and appear as plugin in your main comp. Many people here including yours truly, use this technique and run huge projects. DAws like Reaper and others use a similar way to hook comps.

    Thank You I really want to just test Plugins to see if they are good for me so I thought why not in VM where I can quickly change out or create new ones and expand if necessary I was aware of the driver situations but been a couple of years since I have used any VM's

    Once again thanks I guess I will not go down that path maybe look into multi boot option a regular drive and a test drive
