This is driving me crazy , basically in simpler controls "vel>vol" determines how the velocity of the key affects the volume of the sample played , it is set by default to 35% so that to get the original volume of the sample you have to :
    1. set the volume of simpler to 0db and the velocity of the played key to 100 which is good if you draw your midi because it is the default velocity but if you play it , any note velocity above 100 distorts the sample
    2. set the volume of the simpler to the default -12db and play but the maximum velocity will be lower in volume than the original by about 4db in my case
    3. you can set vel>vol to 0% in the simpler and the volume to 0db so the maximum velocity corresponds to the original volume of the sample but then you lose all the velocity sensitivity
    4. a work around would be to put a "velocity" midi effect before the simpler every time you need to use it and set the maximum possible velocity to 100 and revert simpler to its default
all of this to just make the simpler play what you put into it unaltered , this is annoying

Can't you make a dummy simpler preset, stick it in a rack with the MIDI effect and save it to your library? At least that way you don't need to tweak the settings every time.

(note: I'm not disagreeing or arguing with you, I'm more thinking out loud on how it could be done in Ableton.)

That's the issue with defaults isn't it? There is no one-size-fits-all, but at least setting it up to one's liking has to be done once and after that it's pretty much the same workflow.

There are also simpler VST samplers for this with no gimmicks that would do this.

Then you could just use an audio clip and disable warp I guess.

All of them are pretty much drag and drop. I guess the assumption often is that people don't want just to "play a sample" but want to tweak it, filter it, effect it and so on.
