Well, when a flash picture is taken, it catches pupils dilated due to dimmer lighting.
But I am NOT saying he isn't zooming...
My grandma doesn't do drugs but you'd never believe it from the picture on my desk...

When i was in Greece i had the Yamaha An1x & the su700 sampler, both had ribbon controllers (also the Yamaha rmx1,cs1x & Yamaha aw16g) (see if you can find them cheap in Germany) :

Back in the day there was also the Korg Prothecy  with a unique & expressive dual action ribbon wheel :

^ ...used by  : The Orb, Jan Hammer, Download, Meat Beat Manifesto, Mirwais, Front Line Assembly, Kobe, Depeche Mode, Orbital, Theatre, Überzone, BT, Union Jack, The Prodigy, the Crystal Method, Eat Static, Apollo 440, Radio Head, Luke Vibert, Stabbing Westward, 808 State, Rick Wakeman, Yes, Joe Zawinul, the Pet Shop Boys.....
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nowadays if you simply want to use a software emulation of the Yamaha Cs-80 in your daw & want to emulate somehow what the ribbon controller was doing just get a cheap but useful korg nanoPad 2 & use the touchpad to assign the parameters you want  :
    * there is also the novation sl mk2 that has a similar & nicer touchpad...
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have an ipad check TouchOSC (i'm sure you know about this) :

or just have fun with the Animoog  :

Don't forget the very good Arturia mikrofreak,if you go hardware...(good price/feature ratio & it has a touch strip) :

Once again if you want to have fun (yeah i know crazy me) :

Last but not least, since you're an Ableton user this might interest you,it has a touch strip that you can assign the parameters you want
(expressive touchstrip for controlling parameters such as filter cutoff, pan, and LFO rate) :

    I learnt finally what's a ribbon controller.
And from what I gather of that fancy Roli keyboard demo that keyboard must have one similar thing for each key to allow the vibrato or whatever control you assign to it.
But that also means "too many things can break", same thing I said to people thinking about buying a hybrid electric-gas engine car.

The ribbon does make sense here. Still got the little box.

The Maschines (all of them I think, at least the latest ones do) from NI have a touchstrip/ribbon controller which is wicked fun. Triggering notes strumming style, doing pitch bends and FX. Good times.

    RM1x ? With the AGM2 soundset? It had a bass-boost on it! Shame it didn't have multi-outs.
I sequenced loads on that thing. With my little SU-10 sampler with the ribbon-controller.
I only got them because I was demo'ing for a Yamaha dealer.
I used the RM1x onstage sometimes. The sounds for every song of the set were saved in RM1x songs, so I just changed MIDI channels on my keys to change patches.
But using the ribbon-controller to sweep that fat filtering is great! Scratching not so useful, imo.
