Favorite Reverb Plugin?

    Yeah, if you love Seventh Heaven you shouldn't be using Sparkverb a lot. I think Uvi's Plate destroys all Liquidsonics reverb, a million time and over. If not for cpu consumption Plate on "Insane Quality" murders most of the top reverb plugins on the market.

    Bear in mind, also, I can only speak to how I like/dislike Reverberate, as that's the only plug from Liquidsonics I've used. For example, I actually like a lot of Lexicon PCM's algorithms, doesn't sound too far off from the hardware, but then I tried LXP and it was uniformly cheap and terrible-sounding (possibly also like the hardware). It might be that other Liquidsonics plugs sound better.

    I think its more so because I've had seventh heaven for a while and just recently aquired sparkverb...

    Not really sure why I picked sparkverb over plate as I remeber thinking they were both good....

    Also this somehow reminded me that I forgot to mention I really like Arturia's Intensity Rev as well.

    Well the standard for digital reverbs is still a unit from the mid 80's, so it's not like you can't learn from those earlier pages... personally I still use mainly what I used 3-4 years ago, Verbsuite and Redline. I've tried a lot of new reverbs but I don't feel like they offer much different or better, at best they offer some interesting colour, like those various Studio Chambers plugins, but that's mostly a gimmick.

    No, not my standard, though I do like the Lexicon 480 quite a lot. It is the industry standard. The remote control can be seen on the console in most big studios, a lot of reverb plugins try to recreate its sound, and generally a lot of top mix engineers still prefer to use reverbs from the 80's and 90's and their emulations. You don't have to chase the newest to find great stuff. Just consider when most of your favorite records were made.

    From a tonal quality and spacial realism standpoint, I'm not sure there's much room left for improvement. I have quite a few but the ones I'm using lately are from Relab, PSP, EastWest, Nomad Factory, and Exponential Audio. It's an interesting category because the quality at the lower cost range punches way above its weight (WA Production Mutant Reverb for example).

    I think innovation for reverb plugins in the future is going to be more subtle. Aspects like how they help a track blend in a mix and reduce mixing complexities. I'm beta-testing a reverb right now that matches the spectral characteristics of the input signal and creates a series of options in a quadrant particle display (intimate, natural, rich, artificial). Each particle represents a setting that is suitable for the mix and the closer it is to one of the four descriptors I mentioned, the more prominent that type of reverb characteristic is present. These particles are generated with the intent of minimizing problematic resonances, muddy reverb tails, and other typical frequency driven challenges that reverbs tend to create. So instead of presets you get options specifically tailored to your track.

    I just started playing with it today so I don't have an opinion yet but it looks promising, especially when you're unsure of the tonal characteristics you want to implement. The resonance and mud removal should be especially useful for deeper and atmospheric convolution reverbs.

    If that was true then there would be no market at all, except for Lexicon and the likes. Older reverb units have substantial limits and artifacts because of the technology used at that time. The fact that you or somebody else likes them is a different story but you wouldn't try to pass a car built in the 80's as the industry standard because some people like it and use it to this day. Heck, even the engineers who worked on those reverbs have moved forward, there must be reason!?

    As far as convolution reverbs go, I wish you'd have the option of empty vs "filled" spaces. This won't apply to every space, but the atmosphere of (ie) a concert hall will change; having people in it, absorbing / reflecting waves. Altiverb did something interesting with their King's Hall reverb lately, allowing you to have a closed / open curtain, affected sound in interesting ways. I know it would take ages to fill things up with mannequins or w/e, but you can only hope!

    Anyway, I guess it would be easier for (sophisticated) algo reverbs to model this, in the future? TC Electronic? (Seems like they could do this fairly easily with VSS)

    Interested to know; is what you are testing convolution/IR based? Up until I read that part I thought it sounded algo based.
    On the contrary, imo. Some of the old stuff was actually built to last! Bad analogy though regards fuel consumption/eco stuff.
    Really? PopstarKiller and I concur. We still see the Lexicon in studios. Even with producers who also use plugins.

    I didn't say there was no room for other reverbs, I said that when it comes to reverb, old doesn't necessarily mean less good, which was your implication when you disregarded posts from 2013.

    If a car made in the 80's was still considered by professionals and consumers alike the best car to use, and was copied by half of car manufacturers, then yes, it would be the industry standard. Just as Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Stratocasters designed in the 50's are still the industry standard (and most sold and copied) when it comes electric guitars, or Marshall amps from the 60's still being the most desired amps. Just as LA-2As, 1176s, SSL 4K, and Fairchilds are still considered the best compressors despite being designed half a century ago. Just as the Lexicon 480 and its myriad of imitators are still the industry standard. In audio, old doesn't mean less bad, and that's true to plugins as well.

    Best for what? How much of it is actually a placebo effect? When it comes to real acoustic instruments violin making is considered a lost art and we will only know in half a century if the intruments built in the recent past are any good due to aging but when you switch to other realms things are different. The 480 is such an example: the algos are lost forever and what you see today are just imitations of the rare units which survive, not to talk about the obvious limits the unit has as a reverb. When you assume something is standard it means it should fit all situations you might use it for and the 480 ain't such a reverb and it pales compared to even some basic stuff created today.
    So you got a lost unit (fews of which are around) and approximation of the same unit. Industry standard? Give me a break!

    Malware and spyware. The guy recently apologised to the public or customers. I bought his plugins and don't even use them and no one wants to buy really.

    You don't understand how a metaphor works, do you? particularly a metaphor that you made.

    How does that has anything to do with what we're talking about? whether the algorithm is lost, it's still industry standard. Obvious limits? what obvious limits does it have, apart from being hardware, which isn't relevant when it comes to plugins?

    First, no, something being industry standard does not mean it "fits all situations", just as Strats and Les Pauls don't fit all situations. It just means it's the preferred reverb (and reverb type) of the industry at large.

    Says... who? the famous engineers who still use it? the coders who still try to copy it?

    But let's go back to my point. Just because a plugin is old, doesn't mean it's less good. Do you understand that idea? Do you understand that something from 2013 isn't any less relevant than something from 2020?
