Sorry man, I had to dislike your post because you're just trolling. I don't think you have ever even installed any Linux distro on your computer, so you don't know what you're talking about. Stop it, please. No hard feelings, eh?

Dude, pointless comment, i can imagine a few cases where it could be used primarily even now, if you're just recording stuff.... Glen himself runs a studio powered by AVL.

So yes, it's not where you can fire up your cracked ableton and hosts your cracked plugins, but don't take that for granted, it's nice to have it (Linux) around, for a post apocalyptic reboot who knows...

Needless to say there is bitwig, ardour a fuckton of DAWs to choose from, you even got some plugins by big names like U-He, Overtone, i'm not trying to make you use it, just know that it's available, for free, that's enough.

It's free and it's good, no matter what you think, gotta see the full picture...

EDIT: Don't mind me, judging by your other 5 messages here, it's all you got.

I dont really use linux, but I do like shuriken beat slicer, not the newest but the older ones. Also linux has a ton more scripting possibilities for manipulating audio, for example extracting chords, seamless loops etc. but what ever ableton does a better job anyway, I like it more for programming then music making. I despise all OS'es, except for 1607 LTSB and maybe mac but I kinda hate it with a passion as wel, literall they ask money for everything, xcode , crappy apps, just crack the shit out of mac os x and you have a semi decent rig

I will be frank as all my friends here are more experienced with Linux than i am. Make my (paid) vst(i)s and daw+soundcard run on Linux stable and i 'll switch the next day. It is never about the OS which for the more experienced user is just a shell. I wouldn't care less if it was Solaris or Zeta OS or fkn Amiga Os lol. But i need my tools of preference. I can do Mac , i'll be only missing one windows only app but atm Linux is about switching to an entire new toolbag for me.
    I hope it gets sorted.
    Cheers mates

Linux is now mature enough for the enterprise world? Wow how wrong you are Linux has been mature enough for the enterprise world for many years now. Only OS I know of that is not mature for the Enterprise network is windows.
Anyway please research what you have said and you will fine out. I really hate when people state these things with out really knowing IT.

Totally agree here, I have been using Linux since the early 90s and even back then it was far more stable than any Windows release. In fact, the majority of the internet (DNS servers, time servers, POP3/SMTP/IMAP, web servers) runs on *nix varients from the 90s up through today. How anyone can say it is "now mature enough" only shows how misinformed and naive someone is.

I think generally you can go very far with Linux, there's decent DAWs, there's a bunch of developers who support Linux, and although you won't get everything by far, you should have the most important bases covered.
Thing that kills it though is the lack of Kontakt, as long as there is no rock solid and stable way to run that on Linux, you'd be missing an essential and huge part of music production. That's the main reason I haven't given Linux a serious try for music. I just can't be bothered to go through hours and days of trouble shooting on an OS that I don't feel acquainted with while I try to fix errors in emulators and wrappers while typing cryptic stuff into command lines :(

Ok, you both are right but let's not kill the man because the main topic here is music production.
Another thing is that he said "enterprise" and "Linux", not "network enterprise" or "all Unix flavors". It's true that Linux has been excelling for a long time in all kind of network related tasks and other ones but enterprise sometimes also needs a productive GUI.

I still remember this dinosaur line of Unix servers (Sun's Solaris I think?) with more vulnerabilities than I could count the moment the net began to grow exponentially in the late nineties.

Do HISE instruments work in Reaper,Tracktion or Ardour? We could try porting some Kontakt instruments to HISE instruments.

The amount and complexity of Kontakt script programming in most libs makes that almost impossible in practice.
That being said HISE is a great open source sampler. I watched the creator presentation in a JUCE conference and the guy is a hard working brilliant programmer.

    @RiffMaster
That sounds interesting. Is it plug and play?
When you say Kontakt, do you mean k'd Kontakt? Because I would assume that running it legit would also require you to authorize it with Native Access. Does that run and authorize on Mint as well?

I might give this a look. Thanks.

Not doing anything on your pc. Wow what and idiot. Did you know that Audioz and Audiosex is Linux? I guess Audiosex is doing nothing also.
Stupid people that know nothing about computers say dumb things like this.

Not for you Sine wave Sorry

I use Linux desktop as my main internet box for mail, internet surfing. Linux Mint
I just get infuriated with these MS idiots that say stupid things like this.

Solaris had vulnerabilities yes but you didn't have to reboot the stupid thing for a patch like wind blows.
Linux is able to be patched and stay up even the kernel now.
If you think Solaris is bad windows 98,XP, 7 and 10 have taken the lead on vulnerabilities and reboot heaven.

@waverider Yep on Kontakt 6.3.1 at mo good old r4e never fails lol , you can run and update any software k'd or legit so i guess Native Access will run and authorise as normal . Wine has got so good now and super configurable with winetricks you really can have the best of both worlds running under one hood , have fun mate

Linux for audio production (as of today) is a very bad idea. I guess it's okay if you like to try out things and likes to fiddle with technical stuff. A lot of crashes and headaches guaranteed.

I hate Linux fanboys (with a passion) that will lie you straight in the face and say that Linux is the best OS in the world for everything. If you want something done creatively don't use Linux, but if you like to try out new things and have another OS (like Mac or Windows) for serious work I guess it's okay. I would probably had tried out Linux for different stuff myself if I had a spare pc.

Probably some garbage Linux fanboy that will try to convince me to change OS for music production after this comment. I just say fuck you in advance.

There is no reason that Linux shouldn't be a good candidate for audio production, you have good access to low level CPU and memory access. You can even get a real time kernel, which in theory should help a LOT. What you haven't got is decent driver support, plugin support or uptake from more DAW manufacturers.

Personally I wouldn't use Linux to host my music production, the same way I wouldn't use Windows to host production servers. Its about choosing the right tool for the job. Both are equally good at what they provide.

One day the tide might turn, but until then I will keep both systems separate.
