I don't really get what this is all about. He compares an 1176 that makes ~5dB gr with the next one that makes ~20db gr with the next one that makes ~15db gr and so on. What exactly is this guy comparing? Presets? Maybe someone here can explain the sense to me. Last edited: Jul 28, 2020
Exactly! I just posted it because I thought he was doing a just/fair comparison between different emulators (same GR and same output loudness). I ought to have checked the content before I posted it. Edit: I already have a few 1176 hardware compressors and clones, as well as good software emulations. So I'm not actively searching/hunting for compressors. Last edited: Jul 28, 2020
I do apologize for sounding too harsh, but I do stand by my statement in that the clips were too long. Short 2 beat clips at that tempo would have been more useful. I appreciate the effort he put in though...
Maybe? Wer misst, misst Mist I mean, they're all different. Different weighting of harmonics, slightly different weighting of filters before compression, different attack and release curves. But how can anyone hear these differences in a comparison if the true GR is not matched and differs up to 15db? Matching just the meter is useless, because this one has a curve as well. Sometimes linear, sometimes concave & sometimes convex time constants. Sometimes they even have an s-curve.
You're right. I don't think it's a good comparison video either as far as the testing criteria are concerned and I don't tink you gain any significant insight from it. This guy is known for putting out shitty comparison videos and hasn't learnt anything from it. I guess he's someone who doesn't know anything about production. Most of these comparison videos are pointless anyway. Because if I use a CLA2A or White2A on the Subbass of my beat doesn't change the way people hear the beat. In the end it's important how the bass sits in the track and that's part of the production process. No listener will say, he coulda used a different LA2A emulation here. Sure, If I revist a track and replace the model it would result in a diffent balance but that's mostly because the track wasnt built around that model.
And which plugin emulations do you consider as close emulations? Tested? Compared? Interesting to know what do you think about them) and also VCA, FET, vari-mu emulation: which vst emus do you like as best and closest?
Close to what? We have 2 Teletronix, 2 UA and 4 Stam in studio. They all sound different. Even the two Teletronix sound different. Use what you have and what fits to your material in the context of your mix/production. Last edited: Jul 28, 2020
Opto compressors are more tone machines and smoothers than levelers for me and generally the second to the last of a vocal or guitar track/buss. I can't think of an instance that I shaved off 15dB with one.
Tested it, don't like it. As far as DMG, goes I think his EQs are outstanding and better than FabFilter's, but his dynamics I don't get. But that's just my preference.
