Fucking horrible comparison setup. Those loops are too fucking long.

great job man! something ive often wished was out there for reference on many different plugs. you could do a series of these on a ton of popular hardware emulations. shortening the loops a bit definitely isn't unreasonable but this was certainly a great idea imo

  7. An opto compressor would not be my first choice for drum compression, it lacks the snap of a VCA or an FET.

To me, UAD, Analog Obsession, Brainworx, and T-Racks nailed it: On the bass demo, did felt the string quality of the sound, almost like a low piano string. Amazing.

    A. Don't tell us, tell the author!
    B. You could use arrow keys to skip through the timeline ad num keys from 0-9 to break the timeline in segments.
    C. If you don't like it, you don't have to watch it
    D. If you don't like it, make your own.
    E. If you do your own, upload it to youtube instead so other people can benefit from it.

So, there are a lot of other options instead of complaining…

Not my first choice either, but on Hip-hop drums, it adds a nice layer of thickness sometimes. The nice thing about the LA2A is that it just has 2 cotrol so you can quickly find out if it is working or not, so giving it a try is really quick to execute.

Hi Lenny, did you try the Plugin Alliance ACME Opticom on drums? It's an opto compressor with 3 release settings. It works very well when it works. This plugin is my favorite for opto compression. The amount of saturation is great too.

    Yeah, but let's be fair.
This comparison video IS absolutely useless!

A: They are totally different compressors. Some aren't even inspired by LA2A.
B: The output levels are not properly matched
C: All these compressors are matched by GR meter, not by the actual amount of compression (variation of sometimes ~10db GR)
D: The emphasis of the compressors is not matched
E: The compressors are not even all in the same mode. Limit/Comp?

So, how are you going to get any insight from the video, except for the fact that the creator has no idea what he is doing?

And yes you are right, Opto's can be cool on hip hop drums. Especially on BoomBap type of beats. Because of the long regeneration time they tend to wobble and pump like hell. But in a good way... sometimes.

Great video, also IMO the loops are not too long but that's just me I guess.
I am shocked at how different they sound. Some of them really bring out the room sound in a beautiful way, while others decay very quickly. I would have thought that they would be indistinguishable, considering they're all (or most) trying to emulate a specific piece of hardware.

    Yeah a bit.

Yes, Gyro, linking this vid was a good 'job'. :winker: And if anyone wants to hear more of it, visit the author's YT channel here, https://www.youtube.com/c/HasanDelenHomeStudio/videos for more test, plugins, comparisons and with additional instruments.

In those vids you can jump to the plugin directly due to marks in the scroll bar, or scroll down the page a bit and you'll find the exact times.

Fortunately I have the real Teletronix LA2A.
But yeah, vocals or bass would have been a better source for testing. Not drum bus so much. Drums would have been better on SSL style or 1176 type compressor.

Agreed. It was interesting when Alan Meyerson said he uses it on Orchestral Percussion. But i can kinda see why, it creates more of a swelling thicker dynamics rather than enhancing the punch, but then Orchestral Perc doesn't need it like Hip Hop for example. .
