how do I reduce latency?

Discussion in 'Mixing and Mastering' started by Area51, Jul 25, 2020.

  1. Define "producing?".... recording, arranging, mixing, composing, mastering? or ummmm... making beats..... if it's the latter, I can't help you. I really can't. (I never thought I'd live to see the day that people make money selling beats)

Freeze -> flatten -> process some more -> freeze -> flatten -> waveform alignment.

Are you talking about general latency or specific tracks being affected by it? If it comes down to mixing and you are concerned with it, it should be the latter i guess.. One known issue would be fabfilter eq in linear phase mode and lfo tool ? If that is the case put the lfo tool before the eq and it should be good . if it is something else but in the same ballpark, try to switch the order of the plugins. other than that, if the automatic latency compensation does not work as it should, which does happen sometimes, you have to fix that yourself by delaying your tracks manually. An oscilloscope will be helpful for that.. I have one on a send so i can fine tune different channels easily.

use audio interfaces that has good Asio drivers. Like the Presonus Quantum. Also upgrade hardware like CPU and motherboard that support thunderbolt.
If you have a crappy old laptop I cannot help you.

A simple crazy laptop? Thank G-d for that! Imagine all the damage you could have caused in this forum if you had 2048 GB of ram, and the latest Ryzen Threadripper? It would have been hectic here. Don't ever upgrade your computer.

please stop these micro-agressioned male privilleged hate-filled sexual themed gender-hating offensive comments and emojis.

this is a serious post. stop it.

    pirat - I'm sorry but I can't afford. it's too expansive :drummer:
I asked you (gender-neutrally earlier) to please stop harassing me by invading my safe space.

I consider changing the title of the post to "reducing the amount of trolls on audioz"

please just stop these. this is just offtopic and sexually inappropriate in the forum.

in order to track a voice, record a guitar/keyboard/drums in daw, the latency must be really low (under 10ms). To achieve this, buffersize must be as low as possible without having spikes. The only way is to avoid virtual instruments and avoid insert plugins on channels as much as possible, then apply them later.
There is a workflow that many sound engineers use: apply analog effects on the chain when tracking but send them only in the headphones: this way the singers/musicians will feel comfortable with reverbs, compressors and everything else while performing, but these effects will not be recorded.
The best, most practical (and expensive) way is to use an audio interface with low latency and integrated dsp, unfortunately pricetag of these interfaces are high and not very accessible to bedroom producers
