Hi all,

currently I'm using Sennheiser HD-650's, but I think the highs are a bit 'down' for lack of better terms. I read some reviews and headphone impendance charts which showed that the HD-600's have the highs more 'up'. Most of my tracks translate decent, but the snares and claps are almost always too harsh. Would it be a good idea to get the HD-600's then? 'Cause it's a recurring issue for me.

I was personally thinking of the following:

Sennheiser HD-600
Beyerdynamic DT-770 pro 250 ohm

I will use it through an Apogee Duet 2. I'm basically looking for a good headphone to compose/mix/master mostly Trap, Hip-Hop, RnB and EDM. I want something that translates well. Not more than €500 please. *no*

fit so well on my egg head,that i forget
to take them off...
And the sound does not lie..to me like my speakers do..

Stick with the Sennheiser if thats what you are used to, but anything you choose should do the job rather well.

 

Beyerdynamic all the way. I've tried AKG KRK the Sennheisers and Beyerdynamic DT880 pro are my go to

 

+1 but be careful with the 250 ohm unless you have a good preamp.otherwise you won't get a good level out of them

 

and i think the best bang for the buck you'll get out of the ath50'S..great hp's all in all!a lil' bit to much lows for my taste

I am most satisfied with AKG K240, they may not be top notch, but I found them superior over K702, which were large, heavy and uncomfortable. I use them all the time, for anything from recording to leisure listening. For $130, you can't go wrong . Plus you can easily exchange cables as there's mini XLR on the headphones and the impedance is just 55 Ohms.

If you don't like something about your mixes, there's a rule that always applies - check your mix/master on different gears, preferably the most crappy and cheap ones, so that you know how it'll sound for average listener. It might be weird suggestion, but trust me, it works! *yes*

 

Wow. I had to decide between these exact headphones a few months ago. After of about 3 hours of testing both with my music and professional releases at a music store, I and others picked the DT-770. We picked it because it had a flatter response (little to no coloration) compared to those Sennheisers. Also, I loaded some of my Ableton projects at the store and re-mixed with both headphones, again DT-770 gave me results the translated better when played through a lot of the speakers in the store and in my car. My first set of non-Sennheiser headphones; been using them since and I love them!

As someone else mentioned, since its 250ohm youll need a preamp to get good volume, but I actually prefer the low volume it puts out without one (helps me fight my urge to just turn up the volume when mixing). Very comfortable to wear for long periods too.

 

...Which makes them great for EDM! Have two pairs - can't live without them. Worst kept secret in dance music!

I use an DT770 and an ATH-M50, the former is much more comfortable due to its pads.

Now this all leads me to the following question. I will use the headphone through my Apogee Duet 2 interface. I heard that you need 1/8th of the OHM your headphone has to drive a headphone properly. Is this true?

Do I need a seperate headphone amp and/or dac? I read good things about Schiit, any suggestions?
Both shouldn't cost more than €500 a piece. Also should I go for balanced or unbalanced?

I love my Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO headphones. Don't get me wrong they aren't for enjoying music but like said above, flat as crap and through the spectrum of different speaker setup's they help me most accurately mix/master. Had salesman try to push all sorts of headphones on me "claiming" how good they were. The first few pair were Sennheisers, which sounded good but obviously not flat. Then I got the DT770 pro in my heads and bam. Not to mention the HIGHLY accurate mids. But yeah only problem is signal, If they are plugged straight into my comp they get just barely loud enough, so I usually have to out from my project mix i/o. Anyway DEFINATLY, suggest DT770 series by Beyerdynamic

 

Just to mention that more ohms also mean flatter response. For example, the same model of headphones, but with bigger impedance [ohms] will usually have dimmer bass, which is absolutely not necessarily bad. I've got AKG K240DF which are 600 ohm, and drive them with a preamp that has 80 ohm of impedance on the output. Yes, about 1/8 relationship is about right for optimal loudness. [e.g. 8x80 ohms gives 640 ohms or 600/8=75 ohms, close enough ;)]
