I am finishing up on an album, and I want to get it professionally mixed. Are there any engineers you would recommend that charge on average $300 - $1000 per track, but do a really great job?

It depends on where you are. It's always best to have someone at least in the same time zone and preferably someone close enough so that you can stop in and chat at some point to make sure you are getting what you want. A couple of hours away by car is fine unless you are willing to risk the hazards of flying in the current state of world.

I am currently based in LA, but I honestly do not mind communicating from home.

I thought about recommending Bob K. I don't know how he might be as a mix engineer but for mastering he's The Man.

I really do think that for a small project you really care about and are paying for with your own money that being close enough to hear it at different stages in the treated space of a proper mix studio or an ME's treated post room is worth staying local for. So that's my 2 cents in spittoon for ya' and I'll base any recommendation looking through that particular lens.

If you are in the Los Angeles area you are pretty much spoiled for choice, but prices for mixing are going to be all over the place but quality in such a large market can be easily deduced as there are many known names.

Los Angeles is the other side of the country but everyone hears things and there are always people here and there that you keep in the back of your mind for certain occasions. Like if I was faced with such and such constraints for a project where would I turn to. I've heard good things about Ronan Chis Murphy's Veneto West. It might be a good one stop solution and they can be pretty generous with discounts for independent artists that they like. Look them up if you are so inclined.

As far as MEs go if you are in the LA region you can not go wrong with Mike Wells. I would not recommend that you have your mix engineer master your songs, it isn't a trust issue, it is a humans, spaces and brains that lie to them issue.

However, time and money being real things you'll have to decide that for yourself. If it can fit in your budget though I would separate those two concerns and be certain to tell the mix engineer and mastering engineer what you want before they start or else they'll assume you want what every mouth breather on the planet wants, which is only fine if you want what every mouth breather on the planet wants.

Los Angeles is a bit of mess at the moment, so you might have to have an extended time-table for getting your project to completion.
