Wow, so cool! Thanks, can't wait to hear it. I'm just wondering if I can ever sneak them into something public without the Purple estate crushing me like a big juicy bug *lol*

Nice 2 know there are other true funk soldiers here who also remember the good times!
    I see u!

    See u 2, bruv!
Sooo, what it would appear we have here are two references from The Black Album. The 'Squirrel Meat Rap' was on Superfunkycalifragisexy, and mentioned in the segue before 2 Nigs Unted 4 West Compton.
My vinyl bootleg from Germany (probably leaked by Alan Leeds, Eric Leed's brother, many years before official release) had two bonus tracks, one of which was the original version of Old Friends 4 Sale, with the cocaine lyric.
Yet prior to that it was heard on the Lovesexy tour and video, on Superfunkycalifragisexy.
But, of course, the first time the words Squirrel Meat were ever aired in public...was on March 21st 1987 at a First Avenue pre-tour gig.
He shouts Squirrel Meat at the end of Girls and Boys and the band go into some Madhouse type section, and then later on in Strange Relationship he actually does the Squirrel Meat Rap for the first time!
    On CD as Valium.

And I reckon some of you here might know that too! And that's cool.
I don't do any other social media, and I'm generally a working keyboard player, amongst other recording and engineering things.
So it's really nice to know that some of my musical peers here at AS also appreciate the purple vibes!
I'd rather hang out and chat with other musicians about my life-long purple addiction (if at all!), than with fans of said artist.
In fact, I'd always prefer to hang out with musicians!

    Peas. U Sexy MFs!

I'm not a funky boy, but it's different when Prince plays the funk
The great thing about Prince is/was :-( his wide music range.

Yeah,Black Album was one of my faves, I scored the bootleg on Vinyl at a local record shop back in the late 80's (my version sounds like a bootleg of the original bootleg so probably not worth the big cash that the original bootleg is. I really miss the Purple One and his backing bands (even NPG). Very important in my formative years as a musician!
    RIP Nelson!
And thanks again @Smoove Grooves for the Samples.

With all due respect to Mr. Purple who was an extremely talented individual, he was just channeling what went before with the P-Funk who were reinventing and expanding upon the foundations of Messers. Brown and Hendrix and as awesome as Prince is I like the fountainhead artists even more.

Of course he was part George Clinton part Sly Stone and part Hendrix and part James Brown
But George Clinton was part Sly Stone and part Hendrix and Brown
and it goes on and on.
The OG's are of course the bomb and can that can never be taken away from them!
As someone who lived and breathed P-Funk/ Funkadelic and Sly I hear ya. But Prince was a hella good composer and performer.

He was more prolific though ie. more recorded output than any u mentioned.
He could dance like Brown, play better hammond and piano than Brown. Maceo Parker worked with P.
A tighter funk than in the classics that Parliament gave us. George Clinton worked with P.
U forget he also 'had' the Sly Stone thing down, and had heavily studied Duke Ellington (even up to the cuffinks!), and the top-off, low-waist yellow trousers of Little Richard.
We know all this. It's just a part of why the purple fam love him.
As a musician, I have far more respect for any of Prince's instrumental performances of drums, bass, guitar, vocal or keys over any of James Brown, Sly Stone, George Clinton material.

James, Bootsy and Clyde gave us that first funk track, but James sat on his laurels for the next 35 years. Only 'different' stuff was Living In America and Gut Bucket.
Ellington changed the length of songs for dance purposes, and even featured in films of the time (obviously recorded live) and created the first music videos where they would mime to a recording, and have different dances for different songs! Genius! We owe a lot to him, otherwise songs would still be a minute long.
But again, for the next 50 years he just carried on writing and arranging in the way he had already mastered.
Sly became an addict and lived in his van.
Little Richard denounced his former sexuality and joined the church.
We thank them for their contribution, but what did they do?

    And now...look at Prince.
Over 2000 recorded tracks, yet only 40+ official album releases.

@Trurl I think u are a musician? Are u sure u have really appreciated Prince yet, truly?
After hearing the 1500+ bootlegs and leaked versions of unreleased tracks of his, it doesn't come across to me as if u know him that well yet? There is so much beautiful stuff, bro!

U know that vid of Miles rasping "Yeah, Prince, he got like 5 people." And he reels off 5 artists but holds up 3 fingers and says "yeah, five!". Something like that.

I did forget Sly, totally. Noted! And of course George Clinton cited Sly as a major influence as well and worked with him. And yes Prince was a far better player than GC (who didn't play) or JB (who barely played). I don't know if he was a better player than Eddie Hazel though, or Mike Hampton. Not that it's a competition, they all deserve props. Prince wins easily in terms of being a multi-instrumentalist and auteur...

When u get the full-length JB recordings (unedited stuff that only made it to certain compilation albums) u will see why they edited out a lot of his hammond playing for most of the 60s and early 70s! I'd say 1/3rd of my JB collection has him on hammond.
And George sometimes played bits of bass synth and synth at the early stages of some of his tracks, to get a vibe down.

Basically, it is a competition, and Prince wins! For ever. x

    Great thread!
Can anyone share what to search for on the sister site to locate the samples?
    Much appreciated.
