Focusrite explains as much in its website, however, it is very easy to miss. That is why it is always a good idea to search the forums, and to contact THE MANUFACTURER if you are not sure.

You buy it, and if you upgrade your computer you already have it. Now, if you ever upgrade your PC you will want to upgrade the audio interface, too. BTW, There are excellent interfaces that still use USB 2. With that said, the Thunderbolt, or even better, Dante, is the way to go.

Focusrite is specialised in hiding "details" like the one you mention, or the fact that the headphone preamp is so weak that it can't handle professional headphones.
Then when you ask them, they show a page of their site that you couldn't find by yourself that justify the default.
Believe me, you've lost nothing by changing to another brand.

I thought everybody knew the difference between regular USB-C and thunderbolt. I call it bad investigation on the buyers part. Thunderbolt works great on Windows but you have to buy a motherboard with native thunderbolt or with a thunderbolt header. Also to be absolutely sure that it works as intended buy Intel. AMD still has issues with thunderbolt.

Ahh focusrite. Loved my ole Scarlett, glad to be past it however. Just to add another point as I was confused over this - I have an Asus z87 Deluxe MOBO that supports Thunderbolt 2. Thought I was fucked when it came to Thunderbolt 3 and the USB C form factor. Did research and went for an Apollo Twin X. To my surprise the Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter works like a charm EVEN in a hackintosh on a 2014 motherboard - even as a computer enthusiast I did not expect it to work so well

Lots of manufacturers are implementing it. It des not matter whether it is a home or por set up. Anything that decreases latency should be seriously considered- of course, if there is the budget for it. Another one to look up is AVB which was developed by MOTU, and it is geared toward audio/video.

Edit: AVB was developed by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. MOTU is one of the company who has adopted it.

have you tried the AVB? Big MOTU fan. I have an 8pre and an ultralite mk3 hybrid I just retired. Grabbed an Ultralite mk4 and it was absolute shiiiiiet. All the DSP effects can be controlled on your phone or through a web browser like the AVB - inherently laggy. The device took so long to ping from the web browser that it would take at least TWICE as long to change anything in software, as opposed to the normal standalone program they ditched... tech support said that's that lol. Sounded a tad better though

I don't recommend anything that I have not tried beforehand. We run Dante which is more widely used, and supported, however, I have worked in facilities that implemented AVB, and the experiences have been positive. You said your experience with it was shiiit :hahaha: but don't write it off just because you had a bad experience with it. In the long run it could very well displace Dante.
