Hoping for ARM/Apple failure in order to feel better using your 1998 lousy PC is for losers

Well, yeah, if it's only Linux command line and a bit more you can use from a Commodore 128 til' a Raspberry.
As geek as I am I don't wanna die yet

I see it like this. You can buy an off the shelf kit that will give a 2.0 Golf R 600HP. Thats supercar territory, out of a 2 litre 4 cylinder engine. Thats amazing engineering, but it doesn't overcome the inherent limitations of a combustion engine, an electric car with the same price will still decimate it as electric drivetrain is dropping in cost.

X86 is old news, imagine now if AMD put that same amount of R&D into an ARM processor, assuming they had the expertise and experience. Very soon, ARM processors could easily surpass x86 processors purely due to being far more efficient due to their instruction set.

This is all speculation anyway. Apple being Apple maybe they will kill all fans and heatsinks and make some low power crap rather than take this as an opportunity to make high power machine.

That's because Apple builds high priced life style consumer products and Macs don't make any noticeable money. The ARM will never blow Intel/AMD out of the water and doesn't have to. The new Macs will be the iPhones@Home. Tiny, cool, stylish life style iPhones for big screens. Some models probably won't even include any SSD and run from the cloud instead. ARM Macs will become the mass market for life style consumers who barely need a PC at home anyway. The bigger brother of the iPads. Thats what the consumers want and that's where the big money mass market is.

There will probably be some overpriced kind of machine for developers as well though. But everyone else either adjusts to the new Apple ARM Style or can get lost.

I think more of that Golf 600HP vs a turbo-diesel 200HP discarding contamination.

What about ARM is new news? I mean, the Apple demo was made on a modified iPad ARM CPU.

Well... Let's take it from the top shall we?
ARM first and foremost is a cpu company. They design processors. If you want to manufacture an ARM cpu you have to buy a license from ARM because it's a trademarked and protected design. ARM puts the R&D on ARM cpus not AMD not Intel not Apple. Everyone else explores how to differentiate themselves from ARM's original design so they can say here's my SnapDragon and here's my Kirin and here's my A13 Bionic. Therefore i am reluctant to believe a desktop Apple will outperform an x86 machine for the same money. It doesn't even now which is essentially a pc but more expensive lol.
Both Intel and AMD have experimented with ARM designs but it should be obvious that they would never kill their own architecture in favour of someone else's because someone speculated X86 is "old news". Especially Intel which is a behemoth of a company and also the only cpu company that manufactures their own processors. Everyone else is fabless, with the actual fabrication handed to other companies like AMD, Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm use (China's finest) TSMC to manufacture their processors.
And ok i 've had this conversation in the past one too many times. Apple was boasting X86 as old news when they came up with the G5 design lol. And we all know how that went and then Apple moved from the failed G5 to Intel cpus and made a heapload of cash. Now i like ARM's simplicity. ARM is fine with mobile and it's fine with servers based on its RISC architecture. But as proven time and time again in the past, x86 CISC architecture will always boast faster cores unless a miracle happens all of a sudden.
RISC cpus can support a wider range of instructions which are simpler to execute but put the weight on the compiler. CISC instructions are more complex but CISC cpus have the instruction toolset to decompile built in, making them almost 95% of the times and with most workload types, faster.
As for your car example, have you ever seen an electric Ferrari ? Same goes for computing. ARM may gain ground and evolve, i don't doubt it one bit. But i have my reservations that it will outperform X86 in everyday desktop work anytime soon.
    Cheers :)

Isn't there a clip or banner that requires a Windows driver or something that could crash their stuff real quick?

@Gyro Gearloose , let's not turn this interesting debate into the usual win vs pc fight: there are people here who know their stuff, please listen carefully as i do

This means every soft will stop working on those new macs. Again. But that's happened 70 times already and mac users are down, "let's buy the shit out of those new overpriced macs". Right? :p ;) :p ;)

The thing about a Mac is they tend to last forever, so maybe having an ancient Mac for music production won't be so different then an old 4 track or something. The currently available software seems totally viable to create endlessly so maybe in the future people will realize they may not need to keep chasing whatever it is Apple is dangling at them from the corporate office.

I do think at the current rate of OS development they are chasing off all software developers so Apple is either thinking everyone will be happy with Logic or Tim Cook is about to unveil a new form of entertainment where everyone just stares at each other through their sparkling new Ipads.

  14. There was another thread posted here earlier asking advice about what was the best PC you could buy for $400. I scrolled through 4 pages and not once did anybody interject with any comment that buying a PC was a decision only a fool would make. So it begs the question, why do mac users respectfully stay out of PC discussions while no such civility is shown when mac users would like to discuss upcoming hardware changes that effect only them? Why do they feel entitled to hijack a thread with their opinions where we are the object of derision and treated like imbeciles.

The most interesting thing about this move is what it suggests about the markets they are targeting - eg they're no longer targeting professionals who require high-performance PCs and obviously no longer targeting audio production (which to be fair, is a small market anyway).

This move is about maximising profit within their target markets, nothing more.

completely disagree. The PC and windows posts are highly more interesting and informative compared to mac/apple.
the reason most people dislike apple is their offensive behavior toward their manufacturing people and women. THERE ARE NO WOMEN in apple's higher ups whatsoever. second, they are expensive and not so useful. you can't trust their machines to do the work.

  17. You have a disturbing lack of comprehension. I didn't comment on what was a more interesting topic. I didn't mention anybody's attitude to women. I didn't say they are expensive and not useful. I didn't allude to the machines failing to work.
I said mac users do not troll PC threads.
So please tell me why you want to disrupt a discussion that is of interest to Mac users only?

  18. And other corporations in any industry don't want to make a profit? No longer making high performance computers? The Mac Pro would suggest otherwise as would the imac Pro, both computers that are not aimed at the home user. And not interested in music? The recent Logic update suggests they remain committed to the development of that application. They're a 1.3 trillion dollar company. They aren't worried that some smaller markets don't make as much money as the iPhone.

depends how quickly software and especially hardware devs will handle the new situation, of what I observed, graphics is now Metal only (so all OpenGL apps need to be rebuilt) and audio engine is probably not CoreAudio either (so all audio apps need to be rewritten) which is particularly problematic for DAWs which haven't been made for iOS/ARM yet (I'm looking at you AVID!)

talking about 24/7, I'd say iOS/iPadOS is already far more stable/reliable on "zero-reboot" 24/7 use,
though DAWs and plugins tailored for low/zero-latency operation may be particularly tough to adopt as aforementioned audio engine changes AND the backward/forward compatibility with older/newer Macs and older/newer MacOS

I'm not that advanced dev to tell myself, will be definitely tricky, I expect handful of devs completely dropping Apple, since some were already pissed off by removal of 32bit apps support in MacOS Catalina - though every sane dev should grab this opportunity and at least TRY make things work, since Microsoft already has ARM version of Windows 10 which they'll be most likely pushing wide this autumn too

Ahh... here we go again... I've been there trillion of years ago.
Back then, when the dinosaurs were freshly extinct, I owned an 68k.
These were rather cheap at that time an I was sooo happy with OS (without any X) 7.3.
But Apple had to move on, Motorola had no competetive chipdesign ready so they switched
over to IBMs PowerPC CPUs. And tripled (!) the pricetag on their computers.
It was sold to us like "hey this is the fucking fastest machine you'll find, it's a bargain
compared to any other computer" (any other intel based beast would still have been
on a third of the price).
Lucky me, I have to say I was not able to afford one.
So my first wintel based computer moved in, an overclocked celeron 300, running at 450mhz :D.
Lucky me, because those machine were not inferior, did not make more trouble.
They were just way cheaper, there were tons of warez around (greetings to radium) and that was it.
I laughed when mac evangelists had to move to intel, I laugh every time when there is a new
iteration of OSx and none of the chashcows works any more (photoshop, pro tools, any photoshop
    plugin, any pro tools plugin).
I can only encourage people: You have to switch over to a new architecture anyway.
Switch to a system, where a 16 core 64gig ram monster costs 1600 bucks, not 6100 bucks.
