i am seriously considering that cpu for that very reason. but it is basically the same price as a 3600X, which has two more cores, and a higher rating on each core. it's a lot to give up for a "free" gpu. you can get a pretty cheap passively cooled video card that will outperform the built-in gpu of the 3400g.

 

I agree the 3600X is a better deal. Mind you though, the various 35 dlrs passively cooled Geforce 7100 GT & GS cards and their equivalents (which are commonly present in low budget machines that don't need GPU acceleration) are NOT better than the RX Vega 11 included in the 3400G. The Vega 11 is at least 50% faster. You 'd have to dish out about 60 dlrs for a GPU to match the Vega 11. Luckily there are always some deals on GPUs so you can get a decent Radeon like the OP did with an RX 570 for 70 dlrs.

If you're in Europe, check the Akoya laptops from ALDI.
They're cheap with top specs and great design for the price.
I got one last month and I don't regret a single day. It puts my Toshiba to shame in all aspects (except size. The Toshiba is a "17)

One important thing to remember when assembling a Ryzen 3400G PC is to buy the fastest RAM you can afford. e.g. at least 3200MHz CL15 or CL16 will do great. Because VGA uses the RAM, it loves fast RAM. I like it that you don't need a separate passive VGA which is tricky to buy, a quality one that won't die on you. I have good experiences with passive Nvidia GT730 cards with GDDR5 that consume ~30W. That's probably the most a passively cooled VGA should consume to last a long time. Besides, I had a chance to use one, and measured pretty decent low DPC latency for a Nvidia card. It is not very powerful for gaming, though. Actually it sucks for gaming...

However, as Taskforce said - Vega11 in Ryzen 3400G is a great bargain that you get with the CPU, cooled by the cooler you want, with low DPC latency. It's a kind of a win-win, especially if you're into some light gaming, too.

p.s. there should be no thread on Audiosex about computer hardware without Taskforce. He knows a lot about this shit. ;) I don't assemble as many PCs as he does. Hell, I always read what he has to say about it. TF maybe we should start a audio PC company? [nah, too much work :P]

good to know. as far as you know, are there any passively cooled cards that are at least equivalent to vega 11? it looks like maybe the gt1030 cards with 2gb of ddr5 are very similar in performance. i don't play computer games, so i'm not looking for anything better.

 

A passively cooled card has the possibilty of being hotter than a fan/liquid cooled card. This adds heat to the system, which can cause CPU throttling.

I went liquid cooled last year, I have a quiet and cool machine (Noctua make some great fans that are quiet enough for me. They look like sh*t but they are damn quiet)

you could save on gpu... my onboard gpu has hdmi and displayport...

but AMD chips dont have so much good mobos with onboard so you could consider the Intel + mini itx onboard mobo

 

You humble me mate. Yes, i do assemble a lot of comps, about 40 per year perhaps 50 sometimes. But everyone in the forum is entitled to their word and opinion and of course i deem you of at least equal knowledge. The only differentiating thing about me perhaps, is i have close friends who are computer scientists (of doctorate status) and my fascination for the deeper side of tech got me acquiring some obscure knowledge i would honestly never thought i 'd have 20 yrs ago.
With these said i'm all in for an Audio PC company. And gaming and 3d/ Video editing/composing too. It is already happening for me, believe it or not i make more money with a screwdriver and an external drive assembling comps than with my 200k studio.
I am currently about to take it to the next level manufacturing my first pc case. I have this close friend whose father has a professional refrigerator factory. They have this 1 mil euro robot that cuts iron, glass, steel, aluminium etc, with 0.01 mm precision and can read CAD schematics automatically. Now, i am all about boutique pcs. I love bling as much as i love good functional hardware, so i 'll be going for best of both worlds. I hope i get it right lol, although experience says the first time is always shite hahaha. Wish me luck

Yes they do. I can name 4-5 X570 mobos that are at least equal if not better than any Z390 board. Now there are some Z490 boards (the new ones from Intel) that are interesting but the best cpu you can have with Intel is a 10 core with their normal desktop cpu line. So AMD wins again.

Yep, and in 3D (eg.gaming) they are perhaps 10-15% faster. I wouldn't buy a card with 2gb of ram though. If you need to go for a new card get something with 4gb minimum. It's 2020 and everything goes to 4k man. It's good to know the card can play 4k adequately even if you don't need it atm.

Agreed. I need to quote though that you can always add a fan to a passive GPU if you find it overheats Btw, i love water cooling, it's one of my passions and my next GPU will be water cooled too. I am patiently waiting for the new Nvidias and Radeons to choose from heheh. EKW's factory is very close to my country so i 'll be going for all EK.

Nope. Not with a discrete GPU. Only igpus (built-in cpu graphics) use system ram. And they use it dynamically which means they "suck" as much memory as needed by the application(s) running realtime, but you can also devote a certain amount of ram to a built in gpu from the bios. Also most discrete GPUs use GDDR ram instead of normal DDR and this type of ram is tailored for GPUs and is much faster than the DDR ram used in comps. Not to mention modern GDDR in GPUs is always a manufacturing process generation ahead of DDR. GPUs use GDDR5 and comps have DDR4. GDDR is always manufactured first and DDR follows. In many computing areas the GPUs used are much more expensive than CPUs. Just think that a really good gaming comp typically has a 400-500$ cpu and a 1000-1500 GPU. Scientific comps that use GPUS as CPUs may include like 4 Nvidias inside that cost 10k each. And i haven't mentioned 3D and Video etc etc.
I hope this gives you a small insight about GPUs.
