This might sound stupid. I'm not really an Audio engineering student. I'm taking up computer engineering. But i really dig audio engineering. I'm not familiar with consoles yet. ...and my ear can not really tell the difference. So my question is,

what's the difference between a console's Mic Amp and Line amp? What are the uses of the Line amp?


and what do you guys think about the SSL VHD mic pre? i really like how manley's voxbox sounds but i was curious about the SSL VHD.

 

To put it simple and very basic Impedance​

The SSL VHD imo is great but like all hardware it depends on what you intend to use it for and what you will interface (connect) it too, it gets geeky but it's important.​

Don't be fooled by marketing hype etc always know your specs as far as how and what you intend to use it for, because 9/10 people never get their hardware running at its full potential because of not knowing how and why certain impedance works etc (again i'm keeping very very basic)​

It's hard for me to answer your questions without going down the road of maths etc and as you openly admit you are taking up computer engineering (good luck btw) i'm sure others will paste links etc but basically you need to go back to basics to understand fully or you end up respectively being one of the 9/10.

Seek out books or some online tuition in the form or videos etc to give basic understanding again hands on is better than just theory, a combination of both is a great start and sitting down with others in offline situations is the best way to learn.
