I have both the M50 which I have had for 10 years as well as the newer X version with detachable cables (it came with three). I travel with the X and have detached and reattached one cable or the other perhaps 150 times and as of yet not faced a wonky act up since using it. On the other hand, the permanently attached cable of the M50 on my first pair died after my daughter of at the time 4 years old did a dive onto the bed they were on and then followed through with her slide onto the jack which is super thin and virtually impossible to fix. Even though the little spring at the junction of the jack and cable (the curly one in this case) prolonged it's useful life expectancy, it was no match for 25 pounds of killer kid. Besides the fact that AT no longer manufacturers the regular M50, and even if they did, I would opt for the 50X.

The weak spot on both the old as well as the new incarnation are the soft bits. The ear pads still dry out super fast and the vinyl-like covering of the head rest flakes away too soon for my liking. The bag that comes with it is great and lasts and lasts in its original shape.

    1. Together, the M50 on the left
    2. The M50 with no black vinyl covering remaining at all, under which is not seen as well
    3. The inside of the head rest of of the 50X peeling away which leaves you with black looking dandruff

Those dried out ear pads are not the first originals but are the replacements. I opted for the velvetine maroon as the second pair for the 50X which are cozy and seem to keep more the sound out of my vocal takes and as well as close mixing acoustic guitars or any other source.

    No I'm not trolling, but....
Beats Pro or the Sony MDR-V506
I've noticed a lot of people that own these seem to tape up the branding so they are completely black, presumably as to not advertise for free.

I could swear I've seen a new model of Sennheiser HD380 phones [now HD300 pro] in some online shop [UK or Germany] that look rather stealthy now, but they could be ATH-50x also. However, Sennheiser HD3xx are renowned for their comfort and durability, whilst ATHs sound a bit better [subjective...]. I think comfort - great and durable over-ear pads are nr.1 requirement for recording, with noise suppression at nr.2, not sound.

    Here, Sennheiser HD300 Pro: https://en-us.sennheiser.com/hd-300-pro

The little black lid hides the on/off switch for loudness limiter.

I think you mean MDR-7506 (basically same as MDR-V6).
That said, maybe MDR-V506 could be a mashup model number indicating both or either...

I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pros and 380 Pros. I swear by the 280s (my second pair in 16 years), but the 380s, which are more expensive, a lot lighter and tout a removable cable, sound a bit shitty by comparison. Too much midrange ... probably good cans for vocalists or guitar players, but not balanced enough for mixing.

Well it's certainly putting those headphones to a test of sorts, I guess. I hope the dame realises she has the pattern switch on her microphone set to "cardioid", thus unidirectional, yet with the hot side facing away from her! :chilling:

Good catch. It must just be a photo shoot. I'm just guessing if that is a $25,000 vintage Telefunken U47 she would prolly know which way is up if she were actually singing into it again.

I'll get new AKG headphones when you pry my K240s from my cold dead hands- er, ears. And then I won't because I'll be cold and dead.

Every headphones cable "act up" at some point. The good thing about detachable is that they can be easily replaced, and you get a spare in the package.

That said, I'm not very happy with my ATH. The sound is way too hyped in the low end and high end. And that's the M40x model, which is supposed to be less hyped-sounding than the M50.

If I understood Ken Lewis correctly, the issue is the connector not the cable itself.
