I can't say which is my saddest song ever, it's a hard evaluation, and depends on too many factors.

However, there are pieces, like many posted in this thread that really squeeze the soul.

Sometimes, the combined music and video are even more effective, like certain mixed chemical components can become explosive.

When your not talking about love the next dearest thing to me is music, so the death of music makes me the saddest. The Sound of Silence is obviously the first and American Pie is the second. I believe this is why they are still embraced by every generation since they came out.

 

Somehow every song can become sad after the interpreter dies. When you think about the talent the music world has lost.
I feel emocional whenever I rewatch this video about a musical giant, especially when he says at the end: "I hate to say good bye"

But anyway the saddest one not talking about love (actually it doesn't talk at all. It's instrumental) is this

 

No matter how many times I hear it, it still fucking cuts me up
