    Like some folks have voted, this is partially true. It's more like "seemingly random associations", and that's a great deal of talent/intelligence. Very roughly speaking, of course.

    :rofl::rofl::hahaha:

    Not sure about the natural ability you mentioned: With a lot of practice, one could gain some talent even if he wasn't born with it.

    By Miles' standard my dad was the best musician who ever lived because in his entire career he not only never played a single wrong note, ever, he chose not to play the maximum number of note possible. He had received a trumpet when he was 7 or something and never touched it until the day he died.

    the most useful talent is in nurturing the ability to recognize what we're not so good at.

    i believe that hard work always beats talent. also i feel like if you didnt feel that you were at least to some degree talented you wouldnt even think to start trying to become a better musician. i compare it to the idea that i wouldnt just randomly decide to pursue becoming a high level quantam mathematician. bc i have no interest or natural inclination toward high level mathematics. so why would i just decide to start doing it...

    no one who is not the least musically inclined just decides to start writing/recording/performing music.

    obviously humanity is vast and the variances between us and our abilty levels are as well. there are always outliers and freaks of nature that are just savants at some particular thing including music. but you cant worry about that. it will only negatively effect your drive and ultimately your progress. interest in a certain field is honestly imo all you need to get started.

    the interest is the seed and hard work+time are the sunlight and water.

    also there is the very interesting idea of the "imposter syndrome". its a fact that the majority of figures that are at a high level in any given field often think that they are much less talented than their peers and in their own mind feel undeserving of the praise or adoration they are shown. ie: an imposter. i can definitely identify with this as i am extremely harsh on myself when it comes to my music and am almost always convinced everything i write/record is shit. but then upon showing any of my friends or family (specifically the non musicians) they are almost always extremely impressed and the first thing out of their mouths is also almost always "wow i could never do that."...

    to me its shit but to them it may as well be quantum mathematics.

    TL;DR
    you cant focus on the fact that in your own mind you're not a musical savant. it will only hinder your progress. there is room for everyone to create their unique version of the thing we all love (music). if it was strictly by a metric of pure raw talent we would only listen to one artist... the one that was most talented.

    i would say the best representation of this is for those of us who have been doing this for any remotely substantial amount of time to think back to the first peice you ever wrote and recorded. it was probably shit. and then think ab the piece you are currently working on. even if its still not up to your ultimate standard its probably alot less shit than the first one.. now which is responsible for the progress between the 2. hard work and time spent or talent?

  15. My knowledge of music is quite limited. I never learned to play anything. Despite this I was somehow able to write songs. Good enough that I had a publishing contract by age 22 and even though I couldn't really play an instrument I found I knew what other players should play for an arrangement to work best for almost any style of song and thus went on to be a producer with my own studio. I didn't answer the poll because I don't know if I possess skill or talent.

    No :thumbsdown:, it's all madness, I shouldn't make music at all, I should be dead a long time ago.
