do synths vst or reason stock synths accept audio from other tracks?

in order to be just processed by their filters etc?

    or is this not possible?

i'm not talking about sampling or whatever...just receiving the audio direct/in real time

some do. mostly the modular emulations.

also some software companies have released vsts that emulate those filters etc.

as reality said, some do, some dont. unfortunately there is no workaround (that i know of) to use them like this if they do not have the feature written in.

Basically, that's similar to side-chaining. Some VSTs support it, most don't. In that case you could build your own routing with something like Blue Cat's Patchwork to achieve it, if you cannot do it with a bus in your DAW.

so even if the synth cannot do it, i can do it from within my DAW? i use reaper......most things can be done there.......but not sure how

if that doesn't work i'll consider blue cat thing

i dont think this is true. can you explain how to do that?

as far as i am aware there will need to be an effect version of the plugin to even load it into your DAW as an insert. even if you could load it there would be no inputs programmed into the code of the instrument, so no way of feeding audio into the effects without changing the code for the plugin.
i cant imagine a way blue cat would make this possible either.

maybe i am wrong? hopefully! that would be awesome!
    can you tell me how?

As far as I know, there's no way to force an audio input to be processed in a vst UNLESS it allows it, patchwork or not.

If you think of a vocoder vst, it has one (or more) internal oscillator + filter, etc. controlled via MIDI as the carrier, the speaking voice as a modulator, and sometimes a sidechain carrier that adds up to the internal.

But if you use, let's say, Reason Europa and try to push audio in, it just won't work, no matter what.

it's the same as with a hardware synth, if it doesnt have an audio input port you cant send audio through it

it would be much easier to mod a hardware synth and make it work though

Of course it's only possible, if the plug-in has any audio input at all. Without it there's no way (other than sampling etc.).
Sorry, if this caused any confusion.

    ah okay.
usually if an instrument has an audio input then they will create an effect version of the plugin too, so no workarounds are necessary.

cant ignore that. i LOVE modding audio hardware <3
i wish plugins were as easy to mod though.
is it even possible? can the full code be reversed? or is it lost once it is compiled?

Most Filter VST's are meant to be used with an external audio input.
I think all effect VSTi are as well.

In years past, mamy VST developers produced a xxxxFX version of eg. a synth with external audio input to its onboard filter etc.

There are vsti such as Surge that also have an alter-ego FX version that takes it from the rear and accepts audio to process through its filters, etc.

Don't you lose some features,i being able to let certain parameters modulate the filter, when using a filter VST?

VSTi (VST instrument i. e. synths, samplers) receives MIDI and outputs audio. It CANNOT receive audio.

VST effects receive audio and outputs audio. They CAN receive MIDI but this possibility is auxiliary.

These are definitions of VSTi and VST effects. It's their "nature". Their architecture.

Yes, workarounds are possible bit it depends upon a developer decision. And these aren't a typical case.

Reaper is a bit deceitful in this regard. You load VSTi and VST effects on a track in any order, their type is determined automatically and their internal routing is established automatically too. In other hosts this task is accomloshed a bit different, you CANNOT load an effect as an instrument nor an instrument as an effect, it's just not possible. That's why some of synths (Surge, Synthmaster etc.) have TWO different versions, one for an instrument and another for an effect.
