Learn about Windows-To-Go (A Windows 10 feature) and install it on a spare drive. Anything above 32 GB works. Then you can test new software without messing with your main system. You don't have to use another computer. Just plug it in and reboot and you'll be in your digital playground. Eject and reboot again to get back to where you belong.

 

Takes a lot of work to stream video from a floppy though!

 

I find that much more complicated than simply installing VirtualBox and an OS in it. It starts within seconds, and you can put all the files you need in a shared folder with your host OS.

Loved Spectrum 48k, C64, Amiga 500, and Atari 1024, later Mega4 to the bone... Cubase on Atari could run for days without any crashes. Try doing that with C10 on W10. Hardware was/is extremely reliable, except first versions of EoS for E-MU EIV. and blah blah blah... lol - back to reality. Diva, Dune, Legend, Repro, TAL-Sampler... sound fantastic.

And not to forget: I hope SAiNT is doing fine. Hang on dude!

Virtual machines have improved a lot over the years, but their main focus was never doing real-time audio, 3D or video games. If you go with a VM, you have to dedicate a part of your RAM and since your CPU is shared, it can never use more than the host itself, unless you run a hypervisor directly on the hardware.(which is another topic and too complicated for a musician).

On the other hand, for making a Windows To Go drive you only need an installation ISO, Rufus and a spare drive to install on it. Everything will be the same as a regular Windows minus hibernation, data reset and a couple enterprise related stuff. There's even a mechanism that prevents driver clash since the whole point is running the OS on different machines.

I can think of so many use cases for VMs. You get a lot of on demand features like snapshots, hotplugging and running multiple OSs but real time audio or GPU accelerated processing lags behind native computing if you go that route. I just don't recommend it.
