    Hi guys!

How to understand the autorelease (fast) parameter in dynamics plugins of meldaproduction? The manuals hasn't helped me

    From manual :winker:

Automatic and Automatic fast modes: the longer the level stays above the threshold, the longer the release time will be and thus, the longer it will take to move below the threshold and end the release stage. The idea is that if the input is loud for some time, it willmost likely stay that way for some more time, hence it should be stabilized to avoid unnecessary temporary fluctuations, which couldresult in pumping.
Both automatic modes increase the release time when the input signal is above the threshold and vice versa. The speed of the increasedepends on the Auto speed parameter. Automatic fast mode uses full speed immediately after crossing the threshold, automatic modevaries the speed according to the current signal level.

For example, when a guitarist plays softly, the level is low and fluctuates around the threshold and the release time gets slower. So theprocessor quickly responds to sudden changes. However, when the guitarist starts playing a solo, the level rises and, the longer the solois, the longer the release time becomes, hence the response becomes slower avoiding unnecessary fluctuations (pumping) when the solo contains small silent sections.

I have the feeling that this is close to derail completely.

You can't derail something already derailed.

    we could re-rail it.
so, about that autorelease in MDynamics...

Glad we could be of some help. :hifive:

    On topic:
    I've never seriously tried it.

    Off topic (about time):
Where do we end up if all the release times do what they want??? :guru:

i tried it a few times but, not surprisingly, the release times are never quite what i need them to be.
i am glad you quoted the manual though, i didnt know the times were dynamic. i think i need to read manuals more. i can see some potential use there, but then again i would personally prefer to automate the release control.
the chances of that release time being exactly what you had in mind are very slim.

To me the main problem is that a compressor can't know which release time I prefer, for instance on a drum sound. And this can be completely different times for BD and snare which results in different sounds.

exactly! drums sounds are the best example. half a millisecond difference is a lot with a drum hit. there is no way an algorithm can know what you want there.
im sure there is probably an idea there, but the range in preferences and outcomes is too vast for somebody to program the result somebody else wants.

Thank you guys for many answers. Yes, drums don't require any release variations. But such parts as piano, guitar ballads, funk bass... They have different note durations. I think it's cool to have universal release for it. I love the autorelease performance of waves cla 2a (3a) or fabfilter pro-c 2. But meldaproduction did something different with their autorelease. I hear it actually.

I've read that they tried to imitate something like the analog autorelease performance (like energy accumulation of capacitors, or anything else). Sorry, I'm noob in electronics.

So this question is still interesting for me

glad you are making use of it. there must be a market for it otherwise people wouldnt do it, and this has been a feature across different dynamics processors for a long time now.

how does the outcome affect the result for you?
i imagine it to be like making fast 'transient' parts sound bigger while also making the more sustained parts have some time to breate afterwards. it must be a pain trying to set the threshold for that though? i almost feel like it should have an auto threshold to go with it :D
