In case anyone is interested, I made a small CPU consumption comparison (pre amps off, apart from Track 4 ofc, due to no audible effect). As you can see in the top row it varies:

I've added the free TDR Nova so you can estimate it for your own system.

TDR it's non plus ultra in terms of CPU efficiency. :like:

Not really, all the dynamics are turned off. EQuick needs a tenth of it, even EQuilibrium needs only ~ 60% (but neither of them is free).
With four dynamics turned on its consumption jumps to a bit over 3%.

woah, no way! I believe you, but im surprised im having issues then- it literally maxes out just ONE thread almost instantly sometimes and wont use the others. My CPU came out the same year as your macbook but is top of the line for 2016 (8 i7 cores vs the 2 in an i5). I'm running a hackintosh but dont have issues with any other plugs. Assuming you're running Logic Pro too? Thank you for letting me know, seriously! Would've left the blame on AA

AAs are CPU hogs, no doubt, but as you can see in my post #22 I ran 8 tracks with AA plugins at an average of 29% on an i7 3770, which is even slower than your 4770. But we have very different systems (Win7 here) and Reaper is known to support multi-threading pretty well.

AA is crazy heavy on pc but so far, I've managed tens of other plugins with coffee. The thing is, it depends on the kind of plugin you run along side with all these cpu heavy plugs.

I used to be a thong-wearing AA fanboy. I still love them, don't get me wrong... but I've dialed things back a bit.

The skeuomorphic GUIs look great but suck in practice; both Gold and Cream sound fantastic but the unwieldy UI is such a drag. Give me CraveDSP EQ + Kotelnikov + Gullfoss and I'm ready to go. I use AA sparingly now because my mid-2014 MBP just ain't cut for super heavy duty stuff.

I thought the free Coffee sounded great but I passed on the full suite.
