As far as I know they used a Neumann TLM 103 into a Universal Audio Apollo while sitting on Finneas's BED. At least they did on When We All Fall Asleep.

I personally don't like the Audio Technica 2020. They make better mics than that like their 4033a which still is relatively inexpensive. I own a small condenser AT 4051 that is now probably 20 years old and great for recording acoustic guitar.

I still think a Shure SM87 is the best mic to buy for someone starting out and on a budget. It's quiet, sounds good on everything including kick drum and as a vocal mic you can't go wrong. It's built really well, takes SPL like a champ and could last a lifetime if not totally abused.

Just in the very first few songs and then ran away from it first chance he got. You can listen to those songs and hear the harsh top end as well as sibilence. The newer songs sound a world apart. Of course one can use a lower tier budget microphone to record a multiple billion stream u-tube video, though given the choice and immediately upon income rolling in bought the TLM 103. Finneas could make a smelly sock smell like a rose. The Audio Technica 2020 is a smelly sock with a hole in the heel, and while the SM57 is no silk stocking, it doesn't stink and can be worn with any manner of footwear to great footwear fashion advantage, and as well any competent podiatrist wouldn't hold their breath during a critical examination to try to avoid the smell. Compare Ocean Eyes which used the 2020 vs Bad Guy which utilizes the Neumann TLM 103. It is like night and day, Eau de Dumpster behind a bad restaurant vs the smell of jasmine wafting on the breeze on a sweet summer night. YMMV.

 

I have a brand new SM7B in the box I want to sell because I purchased it with a U47 and U87 and im in a treated room now. I haven't used the Shure SM7B but ill let it good for 299.99 if you want it. I think I paid close to 400 or it w/ tax on top of that. Then ill get some more 500 series stuff lol

A U47? Why not buy a Heiserman U47tube, sell the U47, pocket the difference, have an amazing brand spanking new virtual replica with a fantastic capsule, a 47 that comes with a warrenty and then buy any and all modular devices you care to include on your wall of amazing possibilities.

Also, TLM 103 is way more expensive than AT2020.

 

The OP needs to tell us what the mic will be used for.
