    Hi,

i'm not a professionist but I work with some artists as producer. We made electronic (from house to electro pop).

Often I'm outside and i need to work from my laptop with headphones, even to mix and master. As main headphone, i use DT990 Beyerdynamics.
What headphone do you recommend to realize a full headphone good quality mix and master (specially for the mastering i have some difficulties with beyerdynamics)?

    My budget is 100-400€.

    Hello @Highdom
^ i really don't understand why you can't mix/master with the Dt990's...these are great headphones imho.
As an alternative to them i would suggest the Neumanns NDH20's or the Akg K712 Pro
Around the $300 range look no further between the Focal Listen Pro's or the Audio-Technica Ath-R70x's:bow:
If you're looking for budget headphones on the go(Mobile set up) look at the Audio-Technica Ath_m40x's as they have a really flat response for their price($100) & not heavy impedance (35 ohms).
Hope this helps you, good luck

Another one for the AKG K-702, good for mixing and mastering!
You can get them for 130 bugs.

I use Audio-Technica ATH-M20x's & Sennheiser HD 280 Pro's to mix and 'pre' master when working off my laptop... running either thru Sonarworks Reference 4 Studio Edition (check sister site). When later listening back and comparing in the studio... I find I get really good results. Sometimes not having to alter that much...

Absolutely get something from this list: https://www.sonarworks.com/reference/headphones

Go with Superlux if you are really broke.

Sennheiser HD-580 is pretty much the standard

If you want to have real fun use Skullcandy Crusher to see what amplified bass sounds like.

Anyway use the Sonarworks plugin. It makes any of those headphones on the list great. Tried at least 8 of them. They were all good enough to master.

If you want to go with price performance Beyerdynamic is the way to go. Use sonarworks EQ and try again!

Best of the best master engineers use Oppo Pm-3.

@Highdom After listening to the Listen Pros I must say that model they replaced, the Spirit Pros, are a better choice. Don't let the fact that they are closed back turn you away from these headphones. The ONLY thing against the Focal Spirit is the plastic headband. Eventually it WILL break but Focal will do its best to replace them. In your price range, when it comes to audio performance I will throw the Focal Spirit against any pair of headphones out there, including those costing twice and three times as much. The Focals have replaced my Sens HD700. The sound is well balance, and translates good. Pair them with Sonaworks, and you will not regret it. Call me a Focal fanboi but in this I am not alone.
BTW, used pairs of the Spirit Pros, in almost new condition, can be found in the $80-150 range.

I went down a completely unique route when I started mixing with headphones.

You know how a golfer can have a totally crappy swing, but still hit the ball accurately with distance time after time, well I adapted my own style by selecting a set of headphones that sounded great to my ears. These headphones feature 1.3 watt RMS mini speakers with a frequency response of 5 to 22,000.

The reason I call it my own style is because I had to learn to adapt to the difference between a flat response and my headset. Now I know this option is open to ridicule but I am prepared to put something I have mixed up against anything someone else wants to upload to you tube. (a like for like comparison)

DT-990 is more than enough for even "mastering" on the road. Actually you shouldn't master on the road, because headphones can warp your perspective and make mistakes. Better to "master" on monitors with controlled room acoustics. If you have to be on the road, always have reference tracks on hand to A/B. And get also the Sony MDR-7506 (about $100) as a second pair for a brighter reference. I had the the DT-990 for 15 years. Then, for 15 years I use the MDR-7506.

Word for word what he said +1, apart from that my headband still goes on strong after many years of use.

Great sounding headphones but proice is way over the OP's budget.

He was using custom IEM by JH Audio, which are super expensive. https://jhaudio.com/iems#filter=custom

Sennheiser HD 650, my reference headphones for almost 20 years.
I have tried many other headphones but this one is my favorite.

I use it for mixing and mastering, but only to control my work because i know it very well.
It is comfortable, robust, very precise and it does not tire me during long working sessions.

    I recommand it

    1. You didn't bother to search for previous topics https://duckduckgo.com/?q=audiosex+headphone+for+mastering
    2. It doesn't matter what you do with headphones. Any genre, any purpose.
    3. (his much disliked post is quite true)
When you use speakers, sound is given ample opportunity to interact & warp around your body. When you use headphones, an important part of listening is cut out, and it sounds sterile & alien. Which is why it's not recommend for mastering. If you really must, use an HRTF implementation like Beyerdynamic VS to give a rough idea.

Custom in-ears are hard to beat for sound, but after some investigation I learned that you're most likely gonna have to replace them (the fit) every couple years, because the ear canal changes naturally as you age. So the longer you have them, the worse the fit is going to get, and hence compromised sound - unless you're OK with the ongoing expense every couple years to re-fit.
