btw - I'm using win 7 with 8gb ram on an old laptop that I use often for the web. I'm blasting metal and browsing the web with no issues and probably have 150 tabs open. :lmao: The SSD made this old piece of shit computer like new. I use it to run reaper, ez drummer sometimes when I'm too lazy to go in the studio. Usually just for experimenting with different drum beats and arrangements. Never had an issue with it.

It is, culled from this 2013 Tom's HW article comparing a 4 GB system to a 16 GB system. On a 4GB system, windoze itself eats up about a third of it, so < 3 gigs left for actual programs. Those quickly eat it up, and win starts to swap chunks of it to disk, "paging" (pagefile.sys). 4 gig is unusable, 8 WAY better (but still a grind), 16 sweet, 32 just a bit sweeter than 16 (unless you're doing HD video/3D rendering stuff).

Back in ye olde 2013, when that article was written, dinosaurs roamed the land and humans worried about the reliability of their newfangled SSD thingamabobs. Dark, dark times...

Friends! How things have changed! Today, even as The Great Plague cleanses our Earth of the weak and the old (read in Taxi Driver voice), 1 TB of SS goodness could be had by one and all for just 110 worthless American dollars! Verily, verily, I say unto you, Brothers, truly this is the Age of Miracles! Rejoice!

That said, 16 gigs seems to be the sweet spot for budget winboxen. What people are saying about matching memory is true, but extensive dumpster-diving experience suggests otherwise.

    TL;DR: Go for it.

By having your OS use the free RAM as cache (see Superfetch in Windows, there's similar caching in macOS as well) so it doesn't have to load things from disk all the time. Faster application startup definitely, this could possibly also help with plugin load times and DAW performance (by keeping the audio in RAM instead of streaming from disk on the fly). It's the reason why Windows 7 uses more RAM than XP, and it's also the reason why Windows 10 uses more RAM than Windows 7. Mobile devices do it all the time. Free RAM is worthless RAM. It doesn't slow anything down to have more used RAM, it doesn't use any more power or any more processing power. Why keep it empty when you can keep stuff in there for a performance boost. Mobile devices have been doing this since the beginning

Actually, if the RAM is not matched, it will run at the speed of the slowest stick. They will run in dual channel, just with a common speed and timings.

I would recommend upgrading to 16 GB as the minimum. 32 GB depends, if you work with CAD or/and GIS, or with virtual machines. A big benefit of 16 GB against 8 is, you can deactivate the swapfile (Virtual memory, pagefile.sys). I am running a Laptop Latitude 5470 with 16 GB for more than two years without problems (mostly Reaper, Ableton, FF, Opera), with deactivated swapfile. Sure, if 16 GB are reached, FF for instance has crashing Tabs, so has Opera (~ Chrome). Currently I have 878 Tabs in FF, which is "a bit" memory consuming along with Tree StyleTab. Other software that reaches the memory limit will crash or give a serious warning, some VM's in Vbox won't even load. But I disabled the swapfile because it's not really necessary with 16 GB, but requires some I/O activity even if the system has enough free RAM.

A notable drawback of more RAM is then the bigger hibernation file (hiberfil.sys), and thus a longer time to prapare for, and to wake up from hibernation. From 8 to 16 GB it may not really stand out, but from 16 to 32 GB it does. In W10 the hibernation file seems to be either compressed or writes only occupied parts of RAM, however, I had a Dell Precision 7520 with 32 GB and hibernation preparing/wake up took always considerable time (my employer/owner of this laptop deactivated standby for dubious reasons organisation-wide).

There is a plugin called "Tab session manager" which gives me some secure feeling.

Make sure you back up the session files for that extension. I had that go apeshit once and lost a bunch of tabs data.

Yes it's kind of having a notebook...some tabs are open for years, like http://wunderwelt.atspace.com/...I just realized, I need about a minute to roll through them with Tree Style Tab...It's a bad habit, but Im too old to give it up...hopefully, I die not before I have 30k Tabs or so.
