Hi, i have a dell optiplex 3070mt with 8gb ram (single). When i am browzing at the internet and listen to music, my pc use the most 55 % to 65 % of the available ram. Whould you recomment to upgrade to 16gb of ram, or it whould be pointless? Am i gonna see any speed improvement?

It's not going to give you a lot of speed improvement but overall you're going to have a better time handling for any RAM heavy processes. I recently switched form 8 to 16 gigs and when having 10 tab open in Chrome i'm using only between 25 and 30% of my ram, i have a better control over some heavy Kontakt Libraries & my PC is a bit more responsive than it used to be.

how many tabs opened in your browser at that moment? 30-40? 55-65% of ram is too much.
right now I opened 13 tabs in chrome (one tab - playing video at youtube) and chrome using 6-8% of ram (I have 8 gb).

    more RAM is always better, but if you say your current RAM usage is no more than 75% then any upgrade won't provide a noticeable improvement most likely, especially for "light" tasks like browsing net and listening to music;
on the other hand, are you using SSD for system? that could give nice improvement on any boot and load times - again, not particularly huge improvement, but I'd say that would be better spent money than more RAM for your needs

you have that model with 6-core i5-9500 and 512GB NVME SSD?
if so, then you might probably want to consider buying more RAM to have effectively 32GB or at least 24GB in total, which would result in a very solid machine for a long time!

Thank you all for your answers. Another thing... i found that ram (Crucial 8GB DDR4-2666 UDIMM CT8G4DFS8266) that says is 100% compatible with my pc (optiplex 3070mt) but is a different brand than the one that came originaly (SK Hynix 8GB DDR4-2666 HMA81GU6CJR8N-VK). Is gonna be a problem to combine them, or i need to find exactly the same ram?

you should always combine sticks of RAM with exact same frequency, timings and CAS latency,
brands may be different, but for most reliable operation having same exact pieces is always better

Why does it matter if 50% of your ram is being used?
Is it affecting anything else on your system, your productivity, your work?

In other words - are trying to fix something that isn't broken?

Hi, i am not saying that i want to fix something. I am just wondering if it would be a good idea with 40 about euros only to boost my system. The crusial ram that i mention cost about 36-40euros. Also check taskforce answer. It is an interesting article.

If you never use more than 65% of the RAM installed, how's additional RAM gonna help to speed up your PC? Logic...

Also, for best RAM performance and compatibility use RAM sticks with same specifications. You say you have one 8GB stick installed? Then try to find the exact one, if possible, because you RAM is is working in one channel mode, and after you install another stick they will work in dual channel mode which will help your PC performance a little bit. If I remember correctly around 10% improvement, depending on the task. Anyway, dual channel mode is recommended.

    Cheers!

The old rule doesn't apply here mate. Upgrade is not a fix. If we didn't upgrade we 'd all be using our Pentium 4s and WinXP. Wth i got two of them fully operational and an Athlon 3000mhz.
And @jim26 , explaining what my mate @SineWave said, all Intel and AMD desktop platforms perform optimal when memory is on a dual channel configuration. That is when at least 2 ram sticks are installed to benefit from the bus and ram speed full bandwidth. With 1 ram stick you are working at single channel mode which in practice halves the designated speed bandwidth of your ram. Most desktop motherboards come with 4 ram slots and takes a bit of reading to understand where to put 'em if you never done this before, yours though has only two slots so it is a no brainer where to put those ram sticks.
As talula said you can upgrade to 32 gb of ram, this means though you have to take out your 8gb stick and change it for 2x16gb sticks. While maxing out ram capacity would be -sort of- optimum for any comp, 32gb will cost a lot more than what your little "venture" initially aimed for, when you started this thread, around 120-130 euros minimum.
So, in order to define the extent of the upgrade, you have to ask yourself what do you actually do with your comp. For instance, if you want to work with Kontakt and large sample based libraries, then 32gb of ram can prove handy. If not, it would be a little on the overkill side imho.
Still, 16gb is the absolute minimum for today's standards. Surely you will see some improvements when you work with your DAW. Browsing the internet is not a heavy task unless you open too many tabs at the same time. Therefore you gotta make a choice mate.
    Cheers :)

He didn't say anything about a DAW, he said browsing the internet and listening to music.
Hence "trying to fix what isn't broken."
