If you're sick you're dimishing the risks of infecting others. So yeah any kind of decent surgical mask can help.

If you mean as a precaution for catching it they're completely useless because :

    1. THe surgical ones don't prevent air and particules from passing through
    2. The n95 ones are made for professionals and are very complex to adjust in order to get a perfect airtight cover, professionals are re-trained every year for it because any gap renders the thing essentially useless. Also you need to be fit for them eg. pass a test because breathing is extremely hard and shallow in there when worn properly, i read that they try to wear them by small increments of time before needing to go take some fresh air, not ideal when you're out and about at all,
    3. Most of the risk of contagion comes from direct tactile contact, unless someone sneezed or coughed directly in front or next to you, otherwise it's not just hanging out in the air all day it falls pretty fast onto the floor. (hospitals can be exceptions as there are huge aerosolizing risks but you don't really want to go take a walk in a hospital right now unless you're in a very bad situation already.

Your best protections are gloves and a near-paranoid focus on what you touch or do with your hands along with the common hygiene stuff and the sanitizing of any object you buy or touch in your home between two hand washings after manipulating them

With these and self isolation the chances of catching it are next to none.

Not completely useless, mate. If used the right way.
My daughter is a micro-biologist. She told me the following:
The pathogen of CoViD-19 is a virus that does not spread through the air. It spreads through body contact and droplet infection by means of body secretions. This droplet infection can be prevented with a (simple) face mask in both directions. It is important that you use the face mask only once, then dispose of it properly and thoroughly disinfect the hands with which you took it off.
Passive protection is based on the fact that the viruses in the droplet are trapped in the mask and dry out. The survival time on paper is short. A virus cannot move under its own power.
So, wearing a fresh simple mask is better than nothing.

OMG, it's amazing to read this in contrast to what the media are feeding us with.

Finally something positive in all this shit: I didn't even know it was possible to recover and thought it was a death sentence like AIDS in the 80s.

Can you send a picture of the test result (paper scanned or PDF) and who or where the test came from?
You can black out names and other personal data.

i always find it fascinating hearing what professionals (eg microbiologist) have to say in comparison to the media. particularly after seeing on forums like this people getting jumped on by facebook experts for saying something like that.

Yeah its good of you to share your experience.

I been worried bout this a bit , coz im 42 now, and have asthma, plus ive had alot of chest infections recently that ive still not been able to fully recover from, and im coughing n spittin out crap all the time...

i may actually have c.o.p.d but as yet isnt confirmed, but im sure im developing it because im struggling to breathe alot recently.. and i mean after say, running up stairs im outta breath, or even shouting at sombody....im trying to stop smoking and stop my other vices, but im weak...

"im not scared of anything in this world , except the knowledge of the damage ive done to my lungs and that its a genuine threat that i could catch it, and im scarred my body n immune system may not be strong enough to fight n recover"

So i hope to god i dont get it ,coz by the time ive got symptoms of it, it could potentially be too late due to lung fibrosis thats unrecoverable.. All of which's made me re-think the paths in life ive taken/lifestyle being a huge huge part of that too..

Perhaps its the wake up call ive needed for 20 years.......c ya on the flipsipe i hope...

The uk is looking like were gonna be locked down and i welcombe that tbh.

We gotta get a grip on it n fast!!

smallboy15- thx very much for your summary...
i was looking up for stories like yours and found it here on audioz..

some questions if i may: would you mind telling which country are you living in?
could you guess the amount of days between infection and symptoms (and where you or your gf got it from) ?
from your perspective: are the limitations of public life that we face apropriate? Or would you rate them as an overreaction?
before you were concerned yourself: did you protect yourself and how?

sorry for coming across super-curious- but of course i will be next and i'm trying to evaluate my perspective...
thx again for sharing your story!
