That's why the lights on all my hardware is always on, and hardly ever used.

A specific synth group on FB is the poster boy of this statement. Seriously that group is a plague. They care more about the synth than actual synthesis

i LOVE synthesis. but to be honest sometimes my love for it makes me less productive. i can happily sit there with a modular for 10 hours straight and not make anything usable.
afterward i feel guilty like i masturbated over something i shouldnt have

If you're masturbating for 10 hours straight you shouldn't feel guilty at all. I think you just set a record.

Yeah, it's often true, but is it bad to value the source? I've been a synth snob at times and other times I enjoyed getting sounds from unique, under appreciated places. In the end, it's the recorded sound that matters.

this is why whenever I read a press release that says "made with only analog _________" I lose a little bit of interest, if the tools you used are your leading line the music itself probably isn't interesting enough

Is this a hardware vs software thing?

I couldn't care less, since I've been in the box since '95 out of necessity.

But as far as the "where it comes from" is concerned, there are sounddesigners/companies whose patches I really dig and some which I avoid like a plague. Everything from Cymatics is pretty one dimensional, imo. There are just so big due to their aggressive social media marketing. GoGoi on the other hand is top notch quality.

pretty much how i feel about them.
the only good part is at the end, the "enjoyable DAWless jam". if you can afford it without going without food and water then its worth it for that.

I wouldn't call em synth snobs but I don't mind if a sound comes from analog or software.
Although something feels nice about using an analog synth. Like that new Access Coronavirus TI69 Bipolar I got recently. *insert Family Guy-style cutaway here of whatever that synth would sound like if it existed*

Nither software or hardware equipment will make you a career in the music industry if you are a total idiot.

What really gets me is the whole "granular synth" thing. How would anyone ever know that sound came from a sample of your grandmother's baby grand with broken glass across the strings while immersed in a vat of boiling coconut and palm oil...because now it sounds like any one of a thousand patches from just about any analogue synth...nothing original or unique to everyone else in the world listening...what's up with that??? Even if I knew the source all I would say is WHY???

Say no more I'm already sold on this. But... My only concern is how many litres of boiling coconut and palm oil was used? If it's 2-3, yeah. Sending money now.

the input changes the timbre hugely depending how you program the synth. smaller granules will create more waveform sounding results, but bigger granules sound drastically different with different inputs. this is why i use granular synths for textures and pads etc, rather than bass sounds or anyhting like that
