I released my first synthwave album on bandcamp in 2016 and made like 250 dollars with it. So good luck with that.

Here I just stumbled upon this video.. It was on my YT suggestions page because I recall watching one of this guy's vids. I don't even remember if I liked it so it really doesn't matter... But I think, he pretty well gathered the information how - from bedroom to stardom - really/usually works:

volks music was always on border to schlager...schlager is maybe more modern edm style heh heh...
and the big thing is many german hip hop has become sounding like schlager..sort of...but serious its my impression sometimes..

I started off writing jingles for ad agencies in the 80's. One connection leads to another. My advice is to connect yourself with people who are motivated. Avoid loser musicians. They're a dime a dozen.

Wow I am surprised that EDM only accounts for 3 or 4 %! It feels a lot more ubiquitous than that to me, particularly to younger folks in their teens and twenties. Really surprised it's such a low % number. Mind = blown.

 

lol forget about making money with music, do you really think that producers make money. unless you got a chart hit then dream on, to make money with music you have to sell millions lol, top producers give their music away for free most of the time, its like a buisness card, they make money from playing huge gigs and festivals, and not just that as already mentioned the big streaming sites sell tracks for as little as $1, im afraid you might have to rethink about money and music, in 2011 untill 2014 i had 12 tracks released with Bonzia Records, how much money did i make? well fuck all, after the label take their cut for promotion and mastering they might break even, whats left for you? jack shit.

 

Well, hip hop is definitely a popular trending genre for younger people at this moment. Older people are having different tastes. Are usually not really into hip hop. Mostly into rock. Especially rock from the past and pop, especially pop from the past aswell and from now. So I would say hip hop, rock and pop. Although, a lot of pop tracks are involved with dance sounds and dance beats. So dance, house or stuff like that can work in general anyway.

EDM is not at his peak anymore. Maybe it will come back later again, but for now it really isn't in my opinion. It was especially between 2008-2014. Despite all of that it's still a popular genre, because the mainstream festivals are still usually EDM. Although, the bigger DJ's that are playing at the biggest festivals are mostly coming from that area, because that's when they made their name. Except DJ's like Tiesto and Armin van Buren. They mostly made their name in the business by doing trance music which was very popular in around the year 2000 I quess?

Usually all producers are just going with the flow and what's going to be trendy. So a lot of producers that I really like from the past are now making music in a different genre and now it's absolutely bad, becauze that's just not where their skills are. Well, yeah, that's how it works. Money can change the decisions of people.

The most money is not made with streaming, but with live playing and with touring. It's also important to play live, because on this way you can reach more people to help yourself with growing which means your potentional earnings from streams could increase aswell. Not obligated of course, but can be handy and can definitely help.

Of course unless you go immediately viral with a track that gives a lot of fans to you, but in order to get that you mostly need help from your fans for promoting it aswell. So it can be helpful to already have a sort amount of fanbase. And the way to get that is to work hard in all kinds of different ways for promoting yourself, being patient, etc. It's not an easy business to start in it. Don't underestimate it.

But yeah if you have a lot of followers that are streaming your tracks, then for sure a lot of money can be made, but it's not easy to reach that point. You have to work hard. Except if you have a lot of luck or the right connections as like I said. Or you should spend money by yourself. Can help aswell. Although, there is a chance that you will not earn it back.

You have to spend money to make money

try to reframe the whole deal in your mind.

you want to create business-music - not music-business

you create a business.
you research what products costumers buys
you create products
you spend money on adverticing to the right protential clients, on the right "channels" that those clients are spneding thier attention.

you dont have to "love" any of the music you sell as "products"
it does help to "love it" since then it seems easier to get excited or proud of it when you talk about the products.


another tidbit you might find helpful to research is

craftmanship vs artisan

and the siblings of those different labels sorounding.

it never hurts to redefine differnt ideas and concepts about different subjects we carry around with us in our thoughts, that just play along in the backround of our thoughts never to get questions or revised to improve.

That's exactly where I'm at. I used to want the latter but now I really want to make the profit my priority.

 

You may think about making music for film and TV but it's a very long way to earn some good money. In a short time, I suggest you to make some beats and sell them to new rappers. Less work, more money.

and yes this sure isnt reachable if you just start out

and sure electronic has completly another www shizzle than hip hop and you tube

but www give oportunity to gain solid fan base even from niche genres

Good advice. And always get a decent media lawyer to check possible dubious contracts before signing as that is that yet another way to make fuck all money from writing music!
Personally I think you should find your strengths and concentrate on those skills rather than chasing the dollar and hopefully the coin will come later after the hard work pays off.
