As you know, musical instruments have changed dramatically over time. These changes have been sometimes slow and sometimes rapid. For example, once upon a time the human voice was the only instrument for making music and making music was only possible via this instrument. At those times, teaching was also around this tool and various theories and applications were put forward to use it.

With the advent of other mechanical tools, new concepts were added to music. These instruments gradually replaced human voices and music took a different path from the past. There were various ways to use these new tools. These methods were sometimes compatible with human voice-related methods, and in many cases they were out of line with the previous tools.

As time went by, the instruments became more diverse and the theories of music more complex. It was very time consuming and sometimes impossible to find common grounds in different theories. Many people have made great efforts to unite different concepts and theories, and in some cases have succeeded. But unfortunately the growth of musical instruments and their use were so rapid that the theories were not able to state how instruments should be used.

This shift in the tools and theories increases markedly everyday and makes creating music more complicated. At the present time, changes are very fast, and the explaining theories are being reviewed and updated from different angles. These complexities have grown to such an extent that it is almost impossible to master and use them for understanding and making music in controlling manners.

Voice is still the main instrument of occidental music. Specially in pop.
There isn't a piece of popular music that can't be broken down to some fundamental rules that anyone can access. Theory is easy. Most songs in the popular realm only use a fraction of it, it's not either too complex nor deep.

You don't need to know all for making music. And you don't need to play all the existing instrumets.

If you are a theorist you should try to compare and unify different theories. And you have to know them first.

But as a musician... Take something that seems you interesting and opens your eyes widening your possibilities. Master it. Then use it.

 

No, he is right on the whole (as you are). If we speak about theories, possibilities etc. The reality is very complex, our knowledge (the one of all the humans) should be very complex too. It's our collective expirience. The culture.

But making music is a personal expirience. Mine, yours, etc., etc. It's a very little part of the collective one. May be, original and new one, may be, not. Nobody can embrace the expirience of the humanity. And we don't need this. We can live our lifes.

Personally? I mix with the tools I have to hand. If something doesn't work, I scrap it and find something that does.

I of course agree with you, and it was also my point. Theory has a long history, a lot of different aspect, music as a day to day experience, for musicians, listeners whatever, doesn't mobilize that entirety of knowledge. It never has and never will.
Short of theoricians no one cares about the entirety of music theory, specially not people making music.
The music we all listen everyday reflects that.

 

No one can talk anymore about the universality of rules while modern ways of composing or living have excluded many old rules. Without rules, reference points are lost, and lawlessness and anarchy suffuse the music world.

 

i use whatever instrument/sound has the timbre i want. i honestly think you are over-thinking it, just use what works and make music
