the beta of the pro version is $69. that's a lot of money to be a beta tester. you get some pretty nice fully developed apps for less than that. note that they have not released an update to this program in almost a year. not sure how hard they are working on developing it to a non-beta state.

It is much easier to make an appealing interface than to make it sound better than competition.
Due to placebo, some people may actually hear the better sound, the better the player looks.:)

It's not so great to spend 69$ on it, especially since foobar2000 and Winamp are better, at no cost. But JRiver is much worse than Resonic and 'Windows only' is priced $59.98.
HQ PLayer Pro 4 at 199.00 EUR is the only player really worth the money.

Yeah I actually wish the dev of Resonic went faster.
But actually regarding that particular choice my problem isn't just the sound quality.
It's not a simple player. It allows to handle samples (rex, loops, etc) in a indispensable way for me, and it came to fill a void in win applications, I simply can't find any alternative for that particular purpose out there.
But obviously this is a bit OT, your thread only had in mind the sound quality of audio players, not what is the best sample handling application out there.

True. On the other hand there are a lot of fully developed apps that are worse than a "beta". WMP!? Actually it is more a V1.x than a beta, as t's really usable and I didn't find any problems since 2017. The developer (he, not them) decided to define v1.0 as quite fully loaded. I think for MS it would have been a RC on the state the app had 2017 ;)

Windows Media Player works fine for standalone files.
    MusicBee for anything else.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that the author improves the sound quality by transforming WAVs to RAW bitmap image format (raster image). Then he uses cubic spline interpolation (or also some other algorithms for graphic processing) to improve the 'sharpness', 'contrast', 'brightness', remove artifacts, etc. from the image, and then converts the image back to audio (WAV) format...?

Wow,... what makes you think that? Haven't looked the manual.
It could be possible, but only if you can apply the spline effect as a 1D effect, which is highly unlikely with an image processing framework.
But then again this whole project seems highly unlikely so...

Well, the author himself. He said his program converts audio files into RAW format (=raster, table, ~bitmap) files. And then that it deploys cubic spline interpolation, usually used in graphic processing. I don't speak Japanese, and the true manual is in Japanese only. So it just occurs to me. That's why I said 'correct me if I'm wrong'.
Anyway, the developer is a man with the weirdest ideas I've ever heard of. And image and audio processing have a lot in common (in principle). I have visited a lot of audio forums since, and nobody really knows what it does and how this program works, most of the settings are mysterious (with very strange names), but everybody says that the sound is the greatest they've ever heard.
Also, he has a patent, so he might have invented a new way to apply cubic spline interpolation, or something like that, or whatever...
You might be the right man to solve this mystery, you have enough knowledge, just read the manual (I hope it offers enough explanations).
