The greatest Mixers of all Time Geoff Emerick or Al Schmitt never did this. You just need your ears. Beatles had frequencies clashes and sold millions of records. Too much technology makes the mix sound nasty.

Since I already mentioned the functionality of reference level and gain staging in the previous comment, a 'just stop it' should be enough.

They've had frequencies clashing because of luck of technology but they've managed to sell millions of records because the chicks liked their scouse accents :phunk:

I'm sorry but technology never gets 'too much', haven't you heard of G.A.S.?
i would have agreed to "when someone hasn't got a clue on the technology he/she's trying to use then most probably everything will sound nasty". It's like driving a car and not knowing at what RPM to change the gear.

Err, I haven't used it at all. Why should I? -18 peak results in -21 rms, that's it. It's a question of math and measurement, not soundcard.

The AES17-1998 (r2004) 'standard provides methods for specifying and verifying the performance of digital audio equipment.' That's hardware, mate, not software, of which we are talking about.
Futhermore -18dB (see thread title) isn't even mentionend in the whole paper so, not relevant.

    Next try. :winker:

Wow, you blew my fucking brain!:suicide:
What is your PC running your DAW with a DAC stuck to it mate? Isn't it "digital audio equipment"? home pornhub theatre maybe? fuck knows;)
What does the 1176 from UAD or Waves emulate bro? My grandma's augmented reality bicycle?
    :wtf:
Why don't you get off your high horse for a change and maybe learn something? Is it too much?
    :bash:
What did you say about "AES17-1998?

    Bro...

Do you wanna be 'cocky' with your nonsense? For real?
Should I start billing you for my time? :dunno:
Be advised you may have to put one of your kidneys on alibaba.com;)

This is not correct on several levels.
-18dBFS refers to the PEAK of a 1kHz sine. A variable digital reference level for 0VU is defined here. This has nothing to do with loudness! 0VU is used here as a bridge to average the dBu absolute level (voltage applied, which is always an RMS level) with digital level. It does not have to be -18dBFS. It depends on the nominal analog level and your application. -18dbFS is just one of many possible standarts.

    Ok...
Did you measured the voltage level at the analog outputs? With -16dBFS do you really get an output level of 1,228 volts? Or did you simply turn the absolute level +16dBu into a relative level of 16dB and subtract this 16dB from the absolute level 0dBFS? Because... That's what it sounds like.
