i usually watch videos of ocean waves and I analyse the calm movement of the waves going in and out, then I relate it to sound waves cuz at the end of the day they are all waves and so I use imagery to give me inspiration for audio...

I surf the waves of Malibu at Zuma Beach, and as our esteemed colleague TITZ so eloquently stated, I translate my experience to the aural page. They waves come towards the shore in sets of three so most of my songs are waltzes. Though as my photograph shows, sometimes movement is not called for and stillness is essential to forward the narrative of song.

i love using frequency shifters with very small shifts (less than 0.4 Hz). i dont know what it is about that sound that i love so much.

other things to think about are chorus, flanger, phaser, vibrato, tremolo, ring modulation, frequency modulation and just general automation of parameters.

you can also get a lot of movement from the oscillators too by slightly detuning oscillators from each other and mixing them.

I simply observe the movements of the Buddhist monks and create algorithms to analyze and predict their flow, then draw a line in ableton.

just jokin man, nice method :)

Portal by output has some really amazing presets to kick start your ideas, been one of my fav tools lately to add movement and variety to a normal sound

Applying subtle LFOs to automation is a good idea, at least as an starting point. There're also other kinds of modulators that may come in handy.

Then you can fine tune the automation with a MIDI controller. It's depends on what sound you're working.

Take your music out to the beach for the day. It'll get plenty of movement!

OK OK, but you know my sense of humour by now. I'll let you into my secret weapon though. Go and get Sugar Bytes Turnado from the sister site and let me know if you are using Ableton and I will share my Turnado Template with you.

Isn't that like an improved version of SugarBytes Effectrix? Interesting stuff what this company does.

Humanization (MIDI), randomization (MIDI), random note-on offset, random note length, random velocity (on every new note, variation to taste), super-slow Sn'H LFO on pitch (microtonally off for every note-on, works on drums too), slow sineLFO on pitch (subtle range), superfast Sn'HLFO on pitch (subtle range), warble, wow, flutter, etc.

    In sound synthesis:

2 Oscillators slighty detuned from each other by +/- a few cents from the center pitch = instant movement due to phase cancellation.
    Unison detune
    Phase Modualtion
Envelopes controllong LFOs, Filters, Send Fx amounts, etc.
Using free running LFOs not tied to tempo, stuff like that

I'd also add pan, rvb(s)/delay(s) and morphing between two or more sounds and/or treatments.
    Really it's endlesssssss.

I do filtering and panning with
    intro fill drums/ vocals/reverse pads
depend on type or song style as trance and dubstep need more work than other genres

and there are plugins that can do good fx like
    output movement and sugarbytes turnado

    good luck on your work

I tried effectrix a little before Turnado and it did good things, but I persevered with Turnado and built a DJ Style template in Ableton that gives me unlimited automation options to complete a DJ mix then add the FX in afterwards to ANY or ALL channels with perfect accuracy.

Know your synth then get creative with your Modulation Matrix and use (internal and external) LFOs. Then Automate.

Step-Sequence Parameters as well as Notes.

    Use hands to Modulate.
