I think he just wants to get the best sound out before that, which is the right way to do it.

Try asking some people at school in the engineering department. They could probably tweak a cheap mic to high quality given a schematic of a high quality mic. I'm just going on a whim lol.

You are currently in college, you already own a BAE amp and a 1176 and you are complaining because you don't have a $10 000 mic??:wtf:

Man,I am soon 40 years old and I still can't buy a 1176 or a BAE amp either.

It seems you have been too spoiled too much during your childhood.

after hs I was 18 and I just worked for a insurance agency who was paying me 17 a hour plus commission. All i had to pay was car note and x amount to mom. used the rest to treat my room and buy gear. I am now 23 in school to become a pharmacist. I couldn't take the pressure of sales and 60+ work weeks knowing I have no degree and could be fired at any moment. I need a career with stability if all hell comes crashing down.

I only worked that job for a year before resigning and working as a sever for the next years leading back up to now.

All or most of us at least learnt with consumer or cheap tools when beginnig.I think you would learn better trying to get good results with cheap gear.
Don't compare your productions with millions dollars studios,of course they sound better. They have the best tools and the knowledge on top of that.

true but isn't that the bar and what is needed to make money and gain new fans? if a potential new fan hears my music don't they all subconsciously compare it to the pro records they listen to on spotify everyday?

  14. HTF can you afford these things?

You can't. You need a new plan.

For me what does a nice song is not the $10 000 mic but the compostion, the arrangement, the style, the originality, the mix.

You could get very good results with a $500 mic and good ideas.

You could not insult him even if you wanted to, because he is right. Michael Jackson's Billie Jean vocals were recorded on an SM7, a $300 mic from the same family as SM57. That is the best song in the most selling album of all time. Good enough for your personal bar? Please get an SM7 and if you're getting garbage ass harsh frequencies then search for the root of your problem elsewhere.

  19. That's not affording it.

can you tell us what mic you are actually using right now? maybe it´s the way you drive the signal in the pre? you can work against harshness with that in the 1st place. also i don´t know what your genre is so it´s hard to tell you how you can try to handle your signal to achieve a better result.my 2 cents are that real "harshness" mostly comes to signal treatment..

generally said. like Baxter already statet "Start with a Rode NT1 or Nt1-a, pop filter and a great pre."
without knowing anything i can only co-sign this. it´s not the sexiest mic but in that price-range it handles all tasks and all genres like a boss. i tracked various rap artists with that mic before i upgraded "harshness" is not the problem there. when i say "not the sexiest mic" i mean it´s pretty clean but that´s never a bad thing you still have all possibilities afterwards.
