Nope, no confusion here!
I was just correcting specifically the first three words of your sentence below, because they are actually compressors! Technically, and otherwise.

 

Annnnnnyway... Tried Royal Compressor today and was initially pretty impressed. So, maybe that. We'll see.

 

I like the Royal Compressor, on drums, as a parallel, but it has a character to it that kind of makes it for specific uses...for me, anyway. I usually don't get into compression discussions (online or in the Mad Real World,) simply because it is so subjective to what you're working with, what the rest of your mix sounds like, and what you want to hear--and that isn't specific to parallel compression. That being said, I do have to add that all of Voxengo's compressors get a solid nod from me.

 

El-Rey, APi2500, 1176, Fairchild 670/60.. i have tons of choices, depends on the material source, anyway i always try with UAD plugins first (i own all compressors) then El-Rey.
Note: is incredible how I'm "glued in mind " to the outboard hardware used in the past, so in first I always go for the emu of some old piece of hardware

My stock compressor/go-to compressor.
And I really like Omnipressor and Acme XLA 3 because they have a nice saturation/character while compressing hard to destroy a signal in a pleasing way.
