    Hi guys,
I wonder if anyone has a clue how to replicate it.
Thank you very much in advance!

PD: If a preset exists I wouldn't complain... I have a day job and not much time for sound design. Anyway, next weekend I will try to do it on my own.

For evrybody who dont know the song. I guess you mean the guitar directly at the beginning, dont you?

If we can work with the right MIDI it's the first Step?

I tried some stuff with Strum and TH-U
first it's a pitched guitar non-standard tuning (+0,2- +0,3 in Strum) and the preset "Amped Jazz" (Strum) and "More than just Clean,in a Stack" TH-U sounds
For just two presets it's not bad.
But I think there is something missing like a chorus (bit of) a very light overdrive
and a bit of a short delay
But now I'm too tired to try more

Hi Lukeh, yes I mean the riff at the beginning. Are you still in hospital?

Hi Polomo, thank you very much for your guitar preset, I will try it in a moment!

hmmm...I got a midi file. I can play guitar. what would help me is either an explanation of the effects that make the guitar sound or if someone would have a preset, that is something I don't expect because it's nearly impossible in real life

Maybe this video clip helps a bit. It sounds really near the original. Of cause it needs a little effects.

Another good source for production infos about Depeche Mode songs is here. Also the guitar riff is mentioned.
    https://dmlive.wiki/wiki/Sample_sources#Music_For_The_Masses_.281987.29

In a July 4, 2019 interview with Super Deluxe Edition, Dave Bascombe recalled the production of the guitar riff:

Martin had his guitar, and it’s used quite a bit… the beginning of ‘Never Let Me Down’ for example…. what a wonderful, happy accident that was. It was supposed to start with the snare drum and then go straight in, but because of the nature of technology at the time, the guitar rift[sic] was played, then we sampled it into the Synclavier [early digital synthesizer/digital sampling system] and it just kicked off as soon as it got code at the beginning of the track and we all went ‘wow, that’s great’, so that was an accident."

hi Lukeh, thank you for the info, I studied classical and jazz (piano) but also can play some guitar. in my 20's I used to able to play stuff from Steve Vai and Joe Satriani amongst others. I have no problem to play that, my interest is in understanding how to make the guitar sound... I am playing with line 6 helix and perhaps a phaser with some overdrive will give me the preset I am searching for!

Add some distortion like in the original song, a slow phaser effect, some reverb and you're there!

hi fiction, yes, I fully agree, thank you! I played a few hours ago with the phaser for quite a while and got quite close, but still feel it needs something little else as well. my ears are not trained in sound design so it is very challenging

A mild chorus to the edge of phasing, lil bit of reverb perhaps, some distortion and a wah pedal bro, just using the wah as a filter really not for the fast rhythmic effect. Like here: :)
